Who will be the next bower to do a "Johnson"?

is there a way of finding out the best bowling figures (by average/wickets) over any 12 consecutive innings on statsguru? Would be interested to see just how good Johnson's run is historically. Currently at 49 wickets @ 13.14.

Think Philander's best 12 innings period is 48 @ 13.13, but against weaker opposition.

Definitely reckon Morkel is the guy who resembles the career path of Johnson most. He's been pretty decent, has had periods of excellence and periods of dross but has seemed to underperform given his ability.

Certainly has the natural talent to start gunning it if he ever figures things out completely.

Looking forward to Pat Cummins getting it all together.

Won't happen. He just doesn't have the mentality. Just look at his run up. Nothing incites fear like someone who doesn't look you in the eyes.

People questioned Johnson's mentality though too. I'm not saying I actually think Morkel will do it but I certainly believe he's got the God-given talent to suddenly start wrecking batting lineups.

Johnson has wrecked quite a few batting lineups before, though. It just happened in between, well, dross. Not so now (or so it seems).

Yeah absolutely. Morkel has done it too though, just not to the same extent.

I'd say Morkel has been slightly more consistent than pre-Ashes Johnson in that his highs weren't as high and his lows weren't as low but he's still got everything a fast bowler should need to terrorise batsmen.

Presumably doing a Johnson is showing you have a lot of ability to destroy teams but just not using it properly. Then you look like your career is in trouble, before finally making use of that ability and becoming the player you always could have been.

Very few of the names mentioned here have done the first bit!

Morkel may be the only one that could even fit the criteria.

Nah that's Mohammed Amir to a tee.

Haha yeah true. Didn't see your post mentioning him.

Only issue is people wouldn't argue against his re-selection based on them thinking he'd suck. But Morkel hasn't been dropped so he'd also not fit the bill.

I'd say Finn is the closest to Johnson, gets wickets but bowls lots of dross. Doubt he'll ever do what the current Johnson is doing though.

It remains to be seen whether johnson will continue in a similar vein of form for the rest of his career. I've know now though you simply can't make predictions about johnson... His career progression has been like this: started off ok, nothing amazing but showed promise, then had a fairly lengthy period where he was good, albeit with some poor performances here and there, then had a fairly lengthy period where he was bad, with some amazing performances here and there. So now your kind of thinking 'hey this guy is becoming somewhat predictable; he is actually consistent in being inconsistent'...then he is dropped for a substantial amount of time and is brought back basically by chance because of injuries to other bowlers (there was some fairly token evidence he was bowling well in the shorter forms, but hadn't done anything much of note in shield cricket). He then kills it with not only brutal, but consistent, top tier bowling. Honest to god, if he starts bowling absolute pies game after game, or does the complete opposite for the rest of his career, i'm not going to be surprised either way. He has got to be one of the most enigmatic, unpredictable bowlers of all time.
