***Official*** Australia in South Africa 2013/14

Garson007

State Vice-Captain
Johannesburg - Convener of the national selection panel, Andrew Hudson has named Ryan McLaren and Wayne Parnell as the leading candidates to fill the void left by legendary all-rounder Jacques Kallis following his retirement from Test cricket.

Speaking to the Cape Times, Hudson said the Proteas have been forced to abandon the "seven batsmen strategy" that the Proteas have had the luxury of in recent times, due to the retirement of Kallis.

The Proteas will instead opt to play six batsmen and a bowling all-rounder who will operate as the fourth seamer, Hudson said.

Hudson said the Proteas lacked batting all-rounder options, and certainly did not have players of the same caliber as Kallis.

Hudson named McLaren and Parnell as the leading contenders to replace Kallis.

Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher last week said he would pick McLaren for the South African Test team in place of his good friend and former team-mate Kallis following the 38-year old's retirement from Test and first class cricket.

McLaren, 30, has only played one Test for the Proteas, but Hudson said he was confident that the Knights player wouldn't let the team down.

Parnell will also probably be in the Test squad named to face Australia to add an X-factor for the team, but is likely to be considered as the long-term option to replace Kallis, rather than the immediate replacement.

It seems as much as a confirmation as we're going to get - that they'll pick a bits-and-pieces ahead of someone with an X factor, like a fourth specialist bowler.

Slowly starting to see the merit in Cribblogic. They should just drop Petersen for a quick and pick another specialist batsmen. Duminy can be the 5th bowler and spinner.

If Dekock is to play as an allrounder, question has to be asked is he good enough bowler,is he able to take a Michelle,if so pick him, otherwise pick Mclaren.
Dumney not good enough a part timer to be the spinner, let alone 5th bowling option, bowling more suited to ltd overs cricket.

Well if he is picked as an allrounder, then he can open the bowling with Steyn, should make the Aussies shake at the knees.
Someone suggested Dekock should be picked cause he is an allrounder, just questioning the logic of it all.
If he can't bowl why pick him at 7.

I hope parnell comes right in the future. he is still young... but throwing him into the team would be dn crazy at this stage. Rather Mclaren who can bat and who has been one of the best ODI bowlers in the world this year.
