Who would you recruit for the IPL in the January auction?

I don't think Stokes/Buttler would have been bought tbh.

English players likely to be bought if available are Broad, Bopara, Shah, KP, Azhar Mahmood (if he counts) .

Stokes/Buttler would almost certainly have been bought, IMO. Buttler is an excellent t20 player, and Stokes is an all rounder who already has a bit of a name.

Stokes and Buttler withdrawing astounds me. I can't think of anything more attractive than the IPL as a young cricketer, and I'm not even talking about the money.

You get to go and hang out with some of the best cricketers of the modern era, in new and exciting team models with generally innovative coaching staff. And you get to go to an incredibly diverse country with a fascinating history and culture.

It's what, 6 weeks out of the calender? These guys don't have families or other commitments.

Really think England should be careful not to over-manage their players here. It sounded like an awfully strict environment during the Ashes. TBH, I think it's more likely to be those overly regulated environments that cause burnouts for players than 6 weeks of hit and giggle in which the result - let's be honest here - doesn't really matter at all.
Stokes has at least one kid iirc maybe 2. He's also just played a whole winter of international cricket. England players also make extremely big money- Stokes almost certainly will be added to the central contract list.

Buttler has just moved counties to try and get into the test team and with Prior being dropped in the winter he realises he has a chance.

The english domestic season clashes with the IPL and some of these players have high regard for the counties that gave them a start in the game(or in buttlers case just moved to) and will respect that. Both also are only 22 and 23 and they almost certainly realise they will have plenty of opportunities to increase their bank balance in the future - and improve their subcontinent game. They realise for now they have a great chance of making themselves a key player in the england team going forward for the next ten years.

English players are in the unique position that their county cricket clashes with the IPL. Unlike a random kiwi or Aus they can't play their domestic season then jet of to the IPL in their offseason.

That's not to say that their games wouldn't benefit from playing in the IPL but their intentions are correct imo in the short term to make sure they're in the England team.

fair enough. Didn't realise Stokes had a family.
Yes Scott Borthwick is godfather to his son I think.

In theory you're right. It would be a great experience and good learning curve and you'd possibly make a lot of money. In an ideal world all the players would get a chance to play in the IPL in a spot where there is no cricket but that isn't very feasible. Corey Anderson will benefit a lot if he gets picked up as a young player who wouldn't be doing anything else in the time period and wouldn't be doing anything after it. Stokes and Buttler are stuck playing a lot of cricket before, whilst and after.

Stokes' schedule for instance is going to leave him with basically 18 months of straight cricket at present with hardly a break. (English summer last year, ashes, WI, T20 WC, Full English summer)

Buttler would have been a good buy. He's not as good a T20 bat as 50/40 over but still very decent and is looking good behind the stumps and a very good outfielder if they preferred. Stokes is probably more debateable although I think his bowling will be a real asset in the future. His batting is a little more ragged especially in the shorter formats. Another very decent fielder though.

Swann's elbow must be really shot because he was saying on the radio he couldn't even make it through the IPL. Shame he'd have probably being a good buy for one of the teams before his elbow problems and I think the indian public would have really embraced him as a personality. He's maybe a dick on occasion but he's intelligent enough to play to a specific audience.

One domestic player to grab is Karnataka's opener Rahul Lokesh. He's in great form in the Ranji Trophy, with 891 runs and counting, and can also score quickly when needed- and he's also a partnership builder. He may not get to bat very high up the order for Bangalore (unless they choose to let go of T20 specialist Mayank Agarwal), but there are options elsewhere. I just hope he doesn't get stuck low down the order, and as a consequence, slog everything coming to him without a thought.

I hope Cheteshwar Pujara gets a top four batting position. RCB gave him few to no chances. Hardly encouraging, for a new Test batsman who's doing decently.
