International Debutant
The NZL/AUS combined thread got me thinking , if you could combine the Indian , Pakistani , Sri Lankan & Bangladeshi () sides , who would you pick.

My test side-
1.M.Atapattu
2.S.Jayasuria*
3.R.Dravid
4.S.Tendulkar
5.Inzamam Ul-Haq
6.V.V.S.Laxman
7.K.Sangakkara+
8.C.Vaas
9.S.Ahmed/Z.Khan/AA
10.S.Akhtar
11.M.Muralitharan

Kumar gets in ahead of Moin Khan for his batting.

One Day side-
1.V.Sehwag
2.S.Jayasuria
3.S.Tendulkar
4.S.Ganguly
5.Y.Youhana

8.C.Vaas
9.AA
10.Shoaib Akhtar
11.M.Muralitharan

I always enjoyed the Asian XI vs. The World matches.

Test:

Jayasuriya
Attapattu
Dravid
Tendulkar
Inzamam
Laxman
Moin Kahn (I prefer Moin over Kumar)
Agit Agarkar
Vaas
Akhtar
Murali

ODI:

Tendulkar
Sehwag
Dravid (You cannot keep him out of a one day team)
Jayasuriya
Youhana
Laxman
Moin Kahn
Agit Agarkar/Abdur Razzaq (Hard choice)
Vaas
Akhtar
Murali

Kumble would be hard to leave out. If on a turning wicket, I would say Kumble comes in for Vaas. It least Vaas offers something different.

Ill come up with my teams later but Ajit Agarkar? Dudes he is an average bowler, nothing more, nothing less. Prasad was much better than him and even Nehra is better right now (wasnt able to perform well coz of injury) I dont think Agarkar would make the Indian test XI properly, let alone an Asian XI. I know he bowled well against the Aussies but he is not the class for an Asian XI.

In interested by so many going for Sangakkara at number 7 as keeper.

Surely if the top 6 is good enough for him to bat 7, you could pick a far better keeper to bat at 7?

My team wouldn't be very different from the other ones on here, but personally, I'd go for Moin Khan as keeper.

My team's bowling would have Kumble, Murali, Vaas, Akhtar, Z. Khan, one of them out, depends on the circumstances...

The batting is hardly arguable, so I'll let that be.

if it were in india, as you say, id play 2 spinners. but only 2 pacemen, not 3.

Habibul is Bangladesh's claim to fame.
Mohammad Rafique is not bad either. He outbowled Danish Kaneria and Saqlain Mushtaq in Bangladesh's tour of Pakistan and has 36 wickets at an avg. of 27.7, with a career best of 6/77 vs SA. If he wasn't already 33 he might have had a rather long career. Their next spinning option is 17 yr old Enamul Haque jr., who took 4 wickets in 2 tests against England. Oddly enough he is also left-arm orthodox.

I was shocked o see the absence of Habibul is everyone elses teams. In a better team he would be a tremendous, old-fashioned opener. His only problem is he plays for Bangladesh and is easily their best bastman so is placed at three. Im sure players like Hayden and Trescothick would be placed at three in teh same situation, and I doubt they would do as well in such a losing team.

And Ive seen Rafique on a few occasions and he doesnt really impress me. His record bermuses me as he doesnt really turn the ball at all (although I havent seen him in good conditions). He can be a VERY useful one day player, but I never would have even botered trying him in tests........ even if the team I was selecting was Bangladesh.

Firstly, I just have to laugh at the poor quality of my posts from a few years back.

Anyway...

1. Marvan Atapattu
2. Rahul Dravid
3. Mahela Jayawardene
4. Mohammad Yousuf
5. Inzamam Ul Haq
6. Kumar Sangakkara
7. Chaminda Vaas
8. Anil Kumble
9. Shoaib Akhtar
10. Lasith Malinga
11. Muttiah Muralitharan

Long tail I know, but Vaas's batting in the last 18 months affords him allrounder status, and Sangakkara as the keeper who would hold his place on batting alone allows this to occur.

Shoaib Akhtar's selection is pending match fitness of course. Else I'd probably replace him with Gul or Sreesanth (or Asif, but he'd be in the same boat as Akhtar so having him as backup would be pointless).

Sangakarra is not a #6 guy. He should be in up higher, or not at all IMO.

  1. Sangakarra +
  2. Atapattu
  3. Dravid (c)
  4. Ul-Haq
  5. Yousuf
  6. Jayawardene
  7. Vaas
  8. Kumble
  9. Akhtar

4 Pakistan, 5 SL, 2 India.

Shocked at so many from SL and only two from India....but thats the way it goes. The tail is still too long for my liking but I can't find a suitable all rounder. I don't like playing five bowlers either, but it'll have to do.
