Drop an opener, bring in Ryder. Ryder or McCullum to be made to open.

Our openers simply aren't good enough IMO to justify us playing a specialist opener in lieu of a Test standard bat.

The only other alternative is to rid ourselves of Anderson or our 3rd seamer.

I think i say so because Watling uses the crease where as Ryder stands still and IMO Watling is better mentally, although Ryder looks to be improving.
Ryder on song is more mentally un-flappable than even Taylor. The guy just bats. And bats. And bats.

It doesn't matter whether you use the crease or not as long as you're perfectly balanced when ball hits bat.

.
I would like for McCullum to be forced to open, but there's also Latham who is now knocking down the door with a sledgehammer for that opener's slot. I suppose his selection could be reasonably delayed.

I honestly didn't think it would get to this point so quickly, but unless McCullum scores big in the second innings his position is becoming untenable.

Me too, want this 3rd successive test hundred so badly !
He has also jumped onto the bottom of this list.

Pretty much, which is why anything but having him selected for the test series is un-justifiable. I would rather that they drop Williamson than not play Ryder.
What? WHAT?

And I wouldn't open with Jesse in any universe. Waste of a good number five. McCullum moving up is an option but he's not very good at opening anymore.

He did just score a ton, so I don't think McCullum is at all in danger just yet.

The only batsman in any sort of trouble would be our openers. I reckon we drop one and bring in either the next best opener or Jesse for our next Test match.

The problem with delaying the 2nd new ball is that they are also delaying the 3rd new ball. The West Indies are gonna need that new ball to rip through the tail when New Zealand are 500/5.

What really annoys me about the whole situation is we can't even go back to the best skipper after Baz, and the buck might be passed to KW which risks another Fleming situation. Sure we would take a career average of 40 from anyone, but it would be an underachievement imo. I still suspect Fulton was picked as much for his leadership as his runs in case McCullum's back goes snap, but Fulton, again, would be the 6th or 7th best batsman in the top 7.

Might have a better eye (hard to judge), but KW has the technique and always bats with brain engaged. Ryder with brain engaged has a wonderful temperament but in lol mode is Craig McMillan.
Williamson himself is yet to prove better than Craig McMillan. He will be, obviously, but the point is that he's still averaging under 35 and some good looking technique doesn't change that.
