Quotas to be reintroduced for South Africa

Well that was my point regarding the India/NZ selection dichotomy. Noone is treated equally.

I think this is where the idealogical differences lie so we should probably just leave it at that.

I understand and agree.

Just in my opinion race is one aspect that should never be a factor in selections. Especially if done deliberately with rules like quotas.

Well they lost Wagner due to the quota system. CSA asked him several times to come back iirc (Howsie might have supplied this info?) but he turned them down because he wanted to pay for a country where he was selected on merit.

When the likes of Ntini can play 100 tests I don't think you need a quota system. I can't see state sides excluding a player with a high ceiling due to being black these days, though I might be very mistaken, but the quality appears to be coming through. The lack of black players might be down to popularity more than anything - iirc there were stats a while back showing football and the like were huge amongst the black population?
Wagner was rubbish, he wouldn't have played for South Africa.

He wouldn't get a look in in the current South African side.

He's not better than Steyn, Morkel, or Philander, and the current crop of reserves (Abbott, Tsotsobe etc.) are all probably better than Wagner.

I'm sorry, I forgot we were discussing Wagner's merits for South African selection at present and not his stated reasons behind moving away.

Let's face it, quotas are there whether they are publicly announced or not. I don't agree with them, but nevertheless.

Look at the Aussie "Asian hunt" at the moment. Sandhu, Khawaja and boat boy wouldn't have had such an easy route through if they were Aussies. I say this despite liking Khawaja.

And despite being a mate of mine; would Ish Sodhi really have been selected in the squad for Bangladesh if he wasn't Indian? It looks good on the board's part to be multicultural. He's a social experiment.

If he does play a Test, I'd be really curious to know if any other specialist bowler has had a FC bowling average of over 50 before selection. Might have to search that one up.

I was trying to say that Wagner would never have made the team anyway, same as Kruger van Wyk. They moved because they probably had a better chance of playing international cricket if they moved to NZ.

If you're good enough, you'll make the team, fact.

If Trott had stayed in South Africa he would have played for the Proteas, I think.

Wagner and Van Wyk, not so much.

Wagner is irrelevant to this thread because with or without a quota system he wouldn't be playing for South Africa. He can spout off about 'being picked on merit' all he wants, but the fact is his lack of selection for SA was totally on merit. He didn't merit it.
