Interesting that the 2008 u19 CWC's quickest bowler Matthew Arnold is back playing cricket at a high level for Gauteng. Been part of the Gauteng High Performance along with another fast bowler Sean Jamison who like Arnold didn't actually play his junior cricket for Gauteng.

The Lions seem to unearth raw fast bowling talent from outside their catchment area like Chris Morris & Hardus Viljoen.

Big season coming up for Calvin Savage. Got some good wickets in the 3-dayer on a flat Kimberley pitch and today in the 1-dayer showing his all-round abilities.

In fact pretty excited about the future of Dolphins cricket. Bowes, Oldfield, Subrayen, Savage, Dupavillon & Kirsten is some crop. Could roll back the golden years in Durban if they mature well.

Let's hope he actually plays, and isn't like Chris Gayle who didn't get on to the park once for the Dolphins.

Good signing though, Cobras will have a good side this season.

The six side franchise system was probably the best thing to happen to SA cricket since we were readmitted to international competition I reckon.

To be honest, not the biggest fan of overseas players. But this one is a really good one and like you say, hopefully he is fit and available come the time.

The whole system is superb for mine. Big fan of the provincial system remaining and creating the stepping stone for franchise cricket.

LIONS squad v Dolphins on Sunday

The bizhub Highveld Lions are featuring exciting debuts for the franchise in the team’s first Momentum One Day Cap match at Senwes Park on Sunday. The team face coastal team, the Sunfoil Dolphins in this match that starts at 10:00 in Potchefstroom.

The game features the bizhub Highveld Lions debuts for Devon Conway, Matthew McGillivray and Shaylen Pillay. “We have had some injury challenges of late. Cricket, like any other sport is bound to have its hiccups but we’re excited about the fact that some youngsters will get the opportunity to step to the crease. These are players that have been working extremely hard to earn their place in the side and it is now up to them to fully utilise this break,” said Skipper, Stephen Cook.

“The team’s preparation has other wise gone according to plan and we are really excited to get going . The India experience has been valuable for the guys that went and I believe that this is going to give us an advantage in this year’s competition. There is after all a trophy to defend and we definitely do not want to share it again this year,” Cook added.

Dwaine Pretorius and Neil McKenzie are each recovering from a side strain that they picked up during the CLT20 and Gulam Bodi’s fractured hand is healing according to schedule. Other injuries are Cliffe Deacon (knee injury) and Pumelela Matshikwe (shoulder injury).

Coach Geoffrey Toyana is confident that the injured players will be ready to join the squad soon. “These injuries have definitely had an influence on preparations but we are not weaker because of it. We have made sufficient provision for situations like these in our pipeline and my players are ready for the battle ahead,” Toyana said.

The squad for the match against the Sunfoil Dolphins are: Stephen Cook (Captain), Temba Bavuma, Devon Conway, Quinton de Kock, Eddie Leie, Christopher Morris, Matthew Mc Gillivray, Ethan O’Reilly, Aaron Phangiso, Shaylen Pillay, Jean Symes, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rassie van der Dussen and Hardus Viljoen.

Tickets for the game are available at the stadium.

    About Devon Conway
22-year old Conway is a left-hand batsman originally from Johannesburg and matriculated from St John’s College. His first class debut was in 2009 and in List A matches, Conway has maintained an average of 42.16 and a high score of 132. Conway returned home after a short stint at the Sunfoil Dolphins and has almost 50 first class matches under his belt. He spent the off-season in England at Kearsley cricket club in the Bolton cricket league.

    About Matt McGillivray
Another Johannesburg born cricketer, McGillivray, is 23 years old and matriculated from King Edwards School and studied at the University of Johannesburg. He is a right-arm medium fast bowler that made his first class debut in 2010. He has played 12 List A matches with a high score of 67 and an average of 35.6.

    About Shaylen Pillay
19-year old Pillay has represented his country at SA under 19 level and was also part of the squad that represented the country at the under 19 World Cup. He made his debut for the Gauteng Strikers in 2011 as a right-hand batsman and has scored 256 runs at an average of 39.2 with a high score of 77*. Pillay matriculated from King Edwards School and was also born in Johannesburg.
Always good to see some new blood. Some other good one's like the 3 quicks busy hitting batsmen heads and bodies and sending them too hospital in the first two games of their provincial season in Sean Jamison, Matt Arnold & Junior Dala for Gauteng.
