Warriors team news ahead of Chevrolet Friendship Cup

Botha has a full squad bar Ashwell Prince to pick from for next week's fixtures. Prince will only be back from English county cricket and Lancashire next Sunday.

"Wayne Parnell also won't play next week. He'll be resting but fortunately we've got good news that he will be fine [after an irregular breathing scare]," Botha said.

Captain Davy Jacobs also had a slight ankle injury while playing in the West Indies "but he will play one of the games". Botha said he would be mixing and matching the squad to give everybody a chance.

New signing Ryan Bailey, an allrounder, will also get a chance to play against his former Knights teammates.

Botha is confident Bailey will have a role to play in the Warriors' middle order.

Botha also said Border batsman Vuyisa Makhaphela would be one to look out for this season

"We are also hoping for Jon-Jon [Smuts] to have a good season. He struggled a bit last year but he is a good enough player to come back," Botha said.

Although the squad will be playing internal matches today and tomorrow, there is no substitute for competitive action and the fixtures against the Knights next week will provide solid preparation for the season to come.

DOLPHINS SEASON LAUNCH TODAY

Klusener -

Dolphins coach Lance Klusener is confident the squad assembled for the new cricket season is capable of winning silverware.

The Durban franchise have performed poorly in recent years, last winning a trophy in 2005/06.

"There's some really good quality in the squad," Klusener said during the season launch on Wednesday.

Among their major recruits for the season were former Proteas wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk, who will captain the team after joining from the Knights, as well as England fast bowler Graham Onions, who has been roped in for the three major competitions.

"Morne van Wyk brings some good captaincy skills, as well as his batting experience," said Klusener.

"Graham Onions is a top quality bowler. And if you marry all the work we've done in pre-season to what we've assembled here, you've got a pretty formidable team. It's just about making sure everyone pitches up and does their job, which is something we haven't been doing in the past."

Last season, Klusener's first full-term as coach, saw steady improvement from previous seasons with the Dolphins ending third in the Sunfoil Series. They finished fifth out of six teams in the two other competitions, the One Day Cup and Twenty20 Challenge.

The format of the new season means they begin with the 50-over tournament this year and play their first game against the Highveld Lions in Potchefstroom on October 13.

"We want to win all three competitions, that's why we're here," Klusener said.

"But that's way up in front. For now we just want to focus on what we need to do day by day. If we can get that right, the rest will take care of itself. I think if we can set the foundations early in the season, we'll have as good a chance as anybody."

The Durbanites made two key off-the-field appointments in former batsman Dale Benkenstein as batting coach and mental coach Christo Spies.

"I think there's fresher ideas with Dale coming in," Klusener said.

"He comes with a load of experience as well as the ability to nurture youngsters.

"We mustn't underestimate the work that Christo has done. We've spent a lot of hours with him and he's helped us with a lot of the mental aspects of the game."

Klusener confirmed Van Wyk would be the No 1 wicketkeeper for the one-day competition, with former gloveman and captain, Daryn Smit, focusing on his batting and improving as a bowler.

"He's [Smit] a very good legspinner and we'll be hoping he can contribute more in that way."

Full squad were at the launch at Kingsmead bar Dave Miller, Keshav Maharaj & Prenelan Subrayen who are all in Sri Lanka. Plus Onions to join when the English season ends.

South Africa's domestic players brace for impact
South Africa versus India was billed as one of the premier clashes of the 2013 calendar. Now, however, the tour is almost certain to be stunted from the original three Tests, if not abandoned altogether as the respective boards are locked in a power struggle. If the tour is scrapped, not only will the fans be deprived of some great cricket, Cricket South Africa's finances will also take a big hit. Every domestic cricketer could end up losing R160,000, writes Neil Manthorp in Business Day.

In South Africa the percentage of Cricket SA's (CSA's) gross revenue that comes the way of the players is a little under 20%. If India's tour of South Africa at the end of 2013 is severely curtailed, as it now has to be if it is not cancelled altogether, the likely loss of revenue to CSA will be in the region of R200m. Twenty percent of that is R40m, of which 40% goes directly to the domestic players in the six franchises, a sum of about R2.7m. Each franchise has a contracted squad of about 17 players, which breaks down to an average of R160,000 per player.

Yes Brock, I see our attempt of trying to stand up to the BCCI being futile. We will either be licking our wounds or we will grovel to them with our tail between our legs. Its unfortunate politics has got involved with cricket again.

Kallis' view on JP Duminy being an all-rounder

Jacques Kallis, arguably South Africa's best-ever all-rounder, believes JP Duminy can fulfil this role with aplomb for the Proteas' Test side in future.

Kallis, a 162-Test veteran, has amassed 13 128 runs at an average of 56.10 and claimed 288 wickets at 32.43.

Despite being 37, Kallis's flame is not out just yet, but he has struggled with injuries in recent years and the Proteas should start preparing for when he's not around anymore.

And Kallis believes a man that could play a vital all-rounder role when he's not around is his Cape Cobras team-mate Duminy.

Duminy was mainly considered as a part-time spinner at the start of his career, but has performed a more than adequate role for the Proteas in recent times, especially in limited-overs cricket.

The off-spinner has taken only 12 wickets (at an average of 42.50) in 17 Tests but Kallis feels he could play a more important role with the ball in future.

In an interview with the Cape Times, Kallis said Duminy can become a "fully-fledged" all-rounder in the Proteas' Test side.

"He certainly has the potential and talent to succeed. He is a top batter and bowls more than useful off-spin. If he really works on his bowling, and puts the effort in, he can easily bowl 10-15 overs a day that is required from a top-class all-rounder. I really think JP can do it," said Kallis.

Duminy has scored 789 runs in Tests at an average of 37.57.

Interesting that the 2008 u19 CWC's quickest bowler Matthew Arnold is back playing cricket at a high level for Gauteng. Been part of the Gauteng High Performance along with another fast bowler Sean Jamison who like Arnold didn't actually play his junior cricket for Gauteng.

The Lions seem to unearth raw fast bowling talent from outside their catchment area like Chris Morris & Hardus Viljoen.

Big season coming up for Calvin Savage. Got some good wickets in the 3-dayer on a flat Kimberley pitch and today in the 1-dayer showing his all-round abilities.

In fact pretty excited about the future of Dolphins cricket. Bowes, Oldfield, Subrayen, Savage, Dupavillon & Kirsten is some crop. Could roll back the golden years in Durban if they mature well.

Sunil Narine joins the Cobras for the Ram Slam T20. Great signing that.
Let's hope he actually plays, and isn't like Chris Gayle who didn't get on to the park once for the Dolphins.

Good signing though, Cobras will have a good side this season.

The six side franchise system was probably the best thing to happen to SA cricket since we were readmitted to international competition I reckon.

To be honest, not the biggest fan of overseas players. But this one is a really good one and like you say, hopefully he is fit and available come the time.

The whole system is superb for mine. Big fan of the provincial system remaining and creating the stepping stone for franchise cricket.
