Ryder tests positive for banned substance

"He went home, did the due diligence on it in terms of jumping on Google, checking all the ingredients were safe for him to have and not on the wider banned list.''
anyone else think they misheard 'WADA' here?

No doubt he'll get some 6 month ban and be on the way again. Cricket is so lax with their drug policy. At least others sports are starting to do stuff about it.

How many games did he actually play whilst under the influence - given he's been out of action since March anyway.

The test was taken March 24, who knows when he was previously tested (Craig Cumming went his entire carrier without beeen tested) or when he started taking it, what ever he was on/masking defenitly didnt work as a performance enhancer for his end of season form

How many games he plays while taking drugs is irrelevant unless we want to go the way of NFL where players get 4 game bans for steroids and they're all having heart attacks at 45.
Or weightlifting where they just cycle off the roods a couple of months before competition.
Or baseball where all they care about is protecting their image.

I'm very angry about this. I would like for them to release the name of the particular chemical.

''returned a positive test for 1-Phenylbutan-2-amine (PBA) and N, alpha-diethyl-benzeneethanamine (DEBEA).''

These are methamphetamine analogues that have previously been reported to be spiked in some sports supplements and not listed. "Craze" was one of these supplements. PBA is likely to be a metabolite of DEBEA.

So sounds like a genuine mistake.

Sounds like the ban is retro-active in nature (beginning from when the positive test was identified back in March), so he'll miss 0 game time. Not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it's ridiculous that he should get zero punishment for such a massive mistake. On the other, it wouldn't really be fair to ignore the fact that due to circumstances entirely beyond his control he was prevented from playing any cricket over the last 6 months anyway.

I though the same but from Stuff it appears
that he was provisionally banned from April 19, charged May 1 and he admitted to the offence May 31.
The hearing was only so he could state his side of the case, I am just surprised that all this was kept so quiet.
Also appears from reading through stuff that he asked a Sports NZ trainer if the product was ok to take and he got the all clear

Ryder took a supplement called Gaspari Detonate prior to a gym session to help with weight-loss after a friend had used it to great affect.

The decision states Ryder made his own enquiries about the product and sought the assistance of his long-time trainer Stephen Hotter, a conditioning specialist employed by HPSNZ.

On that information, Ryder thought the product did not contain any substances on the Prohibited Substance List and ''began to use it in association with his weekly gym sessions''.

After doing his own preliminary searches, Ryder sent Hotter a text message saying: ''do you know if any of this is a banned substance?''.

Hotter said he would check.

Hotter gave evidence that he checked the World Anti Doping Agency list for three substances in the product on an iPhone application and later on his computer.

He confirmed he told Ryder none of the ingredients appeared to be a banned substance.

''Mr Hotter's evidence was that Mr Ryder then replied 'so it should be ok' or words to that effect to which Mr Hotter agreed.''

Wish he would start making headlines for scoring test hundreds instead.

Odds on him ever playing another test?

With our top 6? Nothing is certain in life, but , but given his record v India I'd be very surprised if he wasn't back in the team by the end of the season.

Time for a "Will Daniel Flynn score an international century before Jesse Ryder plays another test" thread IMO.

Thanks jcas. Having read through the decision, I can't help but feel a little sympathy for the man. His only fault as I see it, was in not making contact with Drug Free Sport. As the decision stated, not even they could have told him there was a banned substance without forensic testing. I guess that's the price one pays for taking advice from a "friend" on weight loss supplements.
