So um who is opening the batting for us?

Tom Latham
Carl Cachopa
Neil Broom
Daryl Mitchell
Corey Anderson
Colin Munro
Luke Ronchi
Doug Bracewell
Ish Sodhi
Matt Henry
Adam Milne

That batting is ick. Almost everyone is one spot too high and not a single specialist opener in the squad. We already know they're keen to make Latham into an opener, but surely they can't be thinking of Carl Cachopa as well? It's ridiculous considering Fulton and Rutherford will be sitting on their arses while this takes place and Jeet Raval scored runs last summer.

I'd almost be tempted to open with Tastle like it's 2007 again and bump everyone else down one with Munro making way.

The seamers will be good unless Gillespie is truly done but the batting will get skittled.

Otago players to rage at not featuring a bit more in that first three-dayer tbh. They're there for those two games to play, Auckland standing to gain significant morale from proving to be the one decent CLT20 ambassador the country's ever had otherwise.

This squad composition probably has a bit to do with the fact we're travelling to a land where a McCullum double ton is possible itbt. Part of the strategy is to have only one timorous opener in Chops serving as glue, with Latham or Broom being quite assertive and meddling with the hammed-up enforcer visage a lot of Indian medium-pacers try to project these days. They're assuming if we're timorous before the spinners come on, our 300+ hopes are as good as lost anyway.

Yeah a noticeable thing with McHesson though is they're absolutely not about having the slightly cubic zirconia NZ players feeling like they're perennially on trial, that they're only a couple of 'showed his true pedigree' dismissals away from the woodshed. They really stand for the complete opposite of that. Younger players being asked to salute rather than smirk at the wiles required for sustained PS success, etc.

Yeah, I still think we're about 3 batsmen short of a squad, and can't fathom why Daniel Flynn isn't there.

I hope they give Milne a go in the longer formats

tbh NZ A really should be:

Raval
Latham/Flynn
Latham/Flynn
Broom
Mitchell
Anderson/Neesham
Ronchi
Sodhi
Henry
Wheeler
Milne

Carl Cachopa, Colin Munro etc are talented but too flawed to score runs at higher levels as of right now. Gillespie is a plyer we already know is very good on song and terrible when not so we don't need to test what he's made of. When he's on song you play him. Bracewell is someone I view as our first reserve quick more than someone who absolutely needs to be playing A cricket, but I also think by the same token A cricket would be good for him.

Yeah I think they're flying a kite as to what some receptive pitches will actually do for Sodhi. Really had to go hunting for rough to a pretty farcical degree in the PS (9 wickets at a good <20 price around the wicket to left-handers), looked like he was almost bracing for the hits against right-handers at times. A sort of a 'no matter how many revs are on this....' lack of body or conviction in his action.

I quite like the way they keep throwing Gillespie a bone. He was sliding towards a 'could've taken a ****load more fivefers for NZ too, but they didn't like me, didn't like my club, didn't like my school, injuries always cropped up to shaft me, never got a single break' depressing clubroom stalwart type of post-career, but Hesson won't let him get off the hook.

It will be interesting to see how Astle goes. Was it SteveNZ (maybe amost 2 years ago) who said that Astle was consistently dismantled whenever elevated to NZ A level (e.g those winter emerging players tournaments in Qld that use to occur a few years ago). And IIRC was therefore out of eckoning for higher honours.brhiscwas before the regime change.

I'm hoping he's progressed, as I'm a fan, and am hoping some of his rather obvious flaws are due to late development after mid career switch, and can still be ironed out. Because there's a lot about his game I do like.

I'm disappointed that Butler is nowhere to be seen in the squad. Would rather give him a chance in the A team than Gillespie. He's just refused to quit despite a stupid number of back injuries, and you've gotta admire that kinda dogged determination. That and he was ****ing awesome in last season's Plunket Shield bowling first change.

The Indian A team picked for this series is more of an India A team than the Board XI touring South Africa. Ideally, I'd prefer to have a more senior team playing in home matches and a younger, more experimental side going abroad to learn more about playing conditions in different countries. The forthcoming Tests against SA, however, have called for the opposite- as also the last FC in SA ending a day before the first FC against NZ-A starts.

Mohit Sharma not playing is a bit disappointing, but Shrikant Wagh is a good choice in limited-overs cricket- not so much in extended overs. I don't know what to make of picking Jalaj Saxena- loads of runs, but relatively poor with the ball- hang on, so is Nayar. The OD squad has a bunch of lemons- Meenaria, Mandeep and Samson haven't set the charts on fire in either the FC or List-A events, and amongst the better picks, Kedar Jadhav has been patchy and Vijay Zol has just played seven 50-over and four 20-over games, and is in his first season. The Sachin Baby jokes continue, but he's in the OD squad following a very impressive limited-overs season.

Looking forward to Chand's and Zol's performances batting wise. I'm not sure why they haven't decided to take guys like Ishwar Pandey for this tour as well though. Really feel for Pankaj Singh as well, one of the unluckiest guys in cricket I reckon.

Seems the "we run a tight ship" triumvirate (Cricinfo, BCCI and NZC) are now all aligning here. Cribbage or Dan to kindly copy-paste into my OP.

Ishwar Pandey would do better touring than playing at home. Pankaj Singh, on the other hand, I can't say much about- he may be too old and seasoned for this tournament, which is full of rookies. Much like Amit Bhandari standing head and shoulders above the others in India A's tour of England in 2003. As for Chand and Zol, it should be a learning experience and no more.

Is he not good enough? Is he too old for this grade? We can't tell. The Indian selectors don't seem to think he's any good, but looking at the level of experience of both sides, he's too big a player to play here.
