Charlie Macartney is one of those cricketers who is hard to judge because he was an allrounder prior to WWI, but after the war blossomed into a great batsman. It's a shame that he was too old to play more than 14 Tests after the war as his '25 Test peak adjusted average' may have been in the mid-70s if he were able to do so.

Two gutsy openers and three delightful stroke-makers. Please post your requests for great innings scorecards if you have any.

Hard time convincing me Gower is better than McCabe. Am quite enjoying this list so far. 5 great batsmen right there.

McCabe appears to be a batsman of better 'Quality' as he beats Gower 567 to 521 in that category. This implies that in some aspects at least, McCabe is better than Gower.

Yes, Gower's long career in the end just wins out. It's a pity that McCabe couldn't play after the war like Bradman and Hassett did. Was he the same age as Bradman?

He was actually two years younger than The Don, but was plagued by ill-health and injury so there was never any realistic chance of him playing on after the war.

I’ve just read something I'd never seen before about the reaction to his tragically premature death:

“News of McCabe’s death was made public while Australia and England were playing in the Fifth Test at The Oval. After the death was announced over the public address system, the crowd spontaneously stood up and took off their hats, and did the players, and they observed a self-initiated moment of silence.”

WAG.

Crowe's two great innings are his 188 against the West Indies at Georgetown in 1985 (13.89), and of course the 299 (13.15).
