For some reason the Viv Richards that sticks in my mind is the one that played on too far past his use by date, so he's seldom at the forefront of my thoughts, although I do acknowledge that in his pomp he was pretty special

As for Compo that's probably a temporary thing having immersed myself in him to write that recent article, but I was struck by the number of his peers who wrote so effusively about his ability to improvise and make runs where and when others couldn't, and it struck me that adding that extra dimension to the batting was worth having

I'm also interested and glad that Fred has gone for flair over pragmatism and selected Brian Lara in his first XI

Same reason as Compo really – he could be inconsistent and frustrating, but when he was on song (and that wasn’t necessarily when he was making tall scores on roads) he just looked so talented

Spinners in each side. Perhaps I should have put SF Barnes into the 2nd XI ahead of Ambrose. Just went and changed that over.

If you were that old, and that kind, and the very last of your kind, you couldn't just stand back and watch children cry.

Love this team Andy. I replaced Hobbs with Richards cos I love Barry Richards. Love the fact that all the batsmen are aggressive and that everyone in the team from #5 on is an allrounder.

And would Barnes, O'Reilly, and Murali be able to spin out the first team on a typical SCG wicket with the help of Lillee and Miller?

Thought of including another paceman in 2nd Xi but couldn't exclude any of them. Barnes and Lillee to open

Dunno who would captain.. Went for Faulkner over say Miller/Botham etc. cos I needed the spin.

Actually scratch that, going for Ponsford. Both 50+ average as openers, but Ponsford scored centuries more frequently (once every 7 innings, compared to once every 10) and almost doubled Mitchell's 50-100 conversion rate.
