Wasn't he a predominately back foot player? That's unusual as almost all the great batsman of recent times have been front foot players.
As GoSpin mentions, the safety must have been a factor to have better back foot play. But on other hand, reverse swing and mystery spinners have made that you should be very good on the front foot, otherwise the scoring opportunities will be low against these bowlers
