The serviceable all-rounder

In theory I think there may well be a place in most teams for a "serviceable all-rounder" who isn't really good enough to get in the team as either a specialist batsman or specialist bowler.
Hello Derek Pringle.

They have to be able to make a real contribution with bat and ball though and to have a degree of competence in both disciplines.
Goodbye Derek Pringle.

Hammond as a serviceable all-rounder?
Can he be defined as serviceable, given his batting alone puts him at ATG status? More a fantastic batsman with the bonus of being a fifth bowler, like Kallis or Sobers.

Should be discussed more in all-rounder stakes, tbh.

Yeh, true. Hammond would be selected in any team as a batmsan alone.

The intention of the thread was more those players who wouldn't be selected on the strength of either discipline alone, but the sum of their parts makes them very valuable to their teams.

the big bambino

International Captain
He averaged 32 v Aus, 26 v SA and 29 v WI; all strong teams in his day. He played well at home and OS. I think his wkts/test stat looks meagre bcos he was often behind Tyson, Bedser, Trueman, Statham, Laker and Lock. So his role would have been support to those bowlers but as some of his efforts show when he was called upon, he could be a 1st change bowler at least.

Yeah, when you have Laker and Lock bowling on helpful pitches, or Trueman, Tyson and Statham blasting guys out, 2 wickets a test is pretty decent for 5th bowler Bailey.

Definitely a damn good bowler, just had some serious blokes in front of him.

Oram and Styris were legitimately selectable on batting alone though. Again they don't really fit. Very late career Oram is a good call though.

I would say Franklin but he detracts more than the sum of his parts from his team..

Klusener in tests?

Nicky Boje? Selected for his bowling primarily, but may not have made the side if he couldn't bat.

Andrew Hall has to be the ultimate - not quite Test class with the bat, decent-but-not-great with the ball, back-up wicketkeeper and would bat anywhere in the order.

Yeah, I picture Andrew Hall whenever I see this thread in New Posts.

I don't doubt that Bailey was a Test standard bowler, but I doubt he was good enough to get into that particular team on the strength of his bowling alone given the standard of his contemporaries. What put him ahead of them, deservedly, was his serviceable batting. So in that sense a serviceable all rounder.

Ravi Shastri was the first name that came to my mind. Probably good enough to make the Indian side on batting alone for most of his career though - averaged over 35 through 80 tests.

I honestly can't think of a more 'typical' career for this term than his though, honestly. He averages about two wickets a game with 151 wickets @ 40 and 3800 runs @ 35 in 80 tests. I can't think of anyone who was so close to maintaining a 'serviceable' balance so well in the last 30-40 years over a prolonged career.
