North move east hits Scorchers for six

While one of WA’s former Test left-handers is set to join a Big Bash franchise in Sydney this season, another is poised to follow him.

Marcus North will play for the Sydney Sixers this summer in a move that will leave a significant hole in the Perth Scorchers top order.

The inaugural Perth captain’s departure will compound the absence of Mike Hussey who is virtually certain to take up a lucrative contract with Sydney Thunder.

Their likely moves to Sydney will increase the responsibility on senior batsmen Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges, though coach Justin Langer had not given up hope of retaining Hussey.

“We’re working really hard on retaining Mike Hussey but in the end it’s his decision,” Langer told WACA members this week.

“We’ve been really clear with what we think of him personally and professionally and how we see him as important to the Scorchers.

“He is a loyal person, I hope he stays.”

Langer will also widen his search for a substantial international batsman to strengthen Perth’s line-up.

Former South African star Herschelle Gibbs played for the Scorchers at the first two Big Bash tournaments but is not likely to return as Langer attempts to improve the State’s playing culture.

The Sixers are not allowed to announce North’s signing until the end of the initial Big Bash contracting period on July 19, though Perth are planning to be without the 33-year-old.

“We’re looking hard at getting our big rocks into place,” Langer said.

“We’ve left four or five positions up for grabs for guys who we see as really desperate to get those spots.

“We’ll see that through the way they train in the winter, we’ll see that through the way they play in the pre-season.”

North, who was the first WA batsman to score a century on Test debut, has a year to go on his WA contract.
But his Warriors career stalled last season as Langer sought new blood to refresh a team that had gone without success for more than a decade.

North will be eligible to play for the Scorchers at the Champions League in India in September.

Hussey will be required to play for IPL runners-up Chennai Super Kings but the WACA will receive compensation given that the Scorchers are designated as the batsman’s home franchise.

But The Canberra Times believes both the Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades are interested in securing the 29-year-old.
Dean was on the Renegades' roster last summer, but didn't play a game - his heroics in the PM's XI coming after the BBL final.
