Some interesting stuff. There was the possibility of CSA Contracted players Faf du Plessis, Ryan McLaren, Wayne Parnell & Morne Morkel all joining the Cobras as well. But Parnell and McLaren will stay put and Faf and Morne will still play for the Titans but just move to Cape Town.

Also, Cobras batsman, Qaasim Adams, has left the Cobras for the Titans on a 2-year contract.

Some interesting views from KZN cricket legends Mike Procter, Errol Stewart and Pat Symcox on Amla's move - Klusener & Rhodes couldn't be contacted and SA Chief Selector Andrew hudson declined to comment.

Amla

Mike Procter
“He is the best player in the world and with Dolphins cricket at such low ebb at the moment one would imagine that the administrators would do everything possible to dissuade him from leaving. It’s so sad to hear that he is going to Cape Town.

“He is born and bred in Durban. I don’t know the reasons but whatever they are there should have been some compromise. I know Hashim as a level-headed young cricketer and he would have been able to work through things but what went on between him at the cricket headquarters at Kingsmead is unknown.”
Errol Stewart
“What! You’ve got to be kidding,” was Stewart’s first reaction to the news. “I’m shocked, surprised – what else can I say? He is a Durban boy, educated here and has everything going for him in this province.

“He is the best batsman in the world and should be playing here even though he does not get that many opportunities to do so because of his international commitments.

“It’s a great loss to the Dolphins because his presence at anyone of their games gives the team that semblance of balance and he is a guy to have in your team. He is the No 1 Test and One-Day International batsman in the world. I don’t know the reasons. I presume it’s personal and not cricketing issues.
Pat Symcox
“You must be pulling my leg.”

But when he was told that it was the case, he asked: “How could KwaZulu-Natal possibly let him go? Some 30-40 years ago when Barry Richards said he was going to leave Natal those in administration formed the Kingsmead Mynahs, raised money to keep him here.

“Now I hear that Hashim has gone. He’s an icon – every young kid looks up to him.

“I’m just shocked at what has happened. There must be an inquiry. Someone must be held responsible for KwaZulu-Natal losing an iconic sportsman, whom everyone looks up to and respects.”

My old club, Benoni Northerns, is representing Easterns. I think it is the first time they have made it to club champs, it has normally been Kempton Park CC representing the union.

They had a bit of a stinker, poor Benoni Northerns. But certainly a great achievement for them considering Kempton Park and CBC Old Boys and Springs Old Boys who are normally the powerhouses in that region.

Tukkies ended up winning, beating NMMU in the final. Two universities.

Player of the tournament was batsman, Rassie Van der Dussen of PUKKE. Watch this space with him. One of the products of the provincial system and worked hard for years to finally get a franchise contract at the Lions. Looked real classy when I saw him get his Lions debut. A player to watch for the new season.

I think they did OK, all things considered, 2 wins out of 5 isn't bad.

And they also don't have any franchise or amateur provincial cricketers in their side, I don't think.

30 year old Ryan Bailey has extensive experience having played 97 First-class ,103 Limited over and 60 T20 matches. Bailey is currently overseas playing club cricket and will return to set up home in Port Elizabeth in September.

The full contracted list is as follows:

Commenting on the squad, Lance Klusener, Sunfoil Dolphins coach said, “I am looking forward to working with the team. I believe this is a young and talented squad that has the potential to get KZN back to the top of domestic cricket”.

KZN Cricket (Pty) Ltd CEO, Jesse Chellan commented, “We have retained the vast majority of our Sunfoil Dolphins contracted players from last season, with the loss of Ahmed Amla and Dane Paterson.

Although our results have not always shown it, the squad is maturing and starting to deliver on its potential.

Some examples of this are:

■Achieving 4 wins out of 5 matches during the Sunfoil Series.
■Kyle Abbott’s elevation to the Proteas team, after being the leading wicket taker in 4 day cricket with 49 wickets at an average of 15.
■David Miller’s call up to the Proteas Champions Trophy squad on the back on his domestic limited overs performances, including his outstanding 101 off 38 balls for the Kings XI
■Vaughn van Jaarsveld’s career best performance of 160 against the Titans
■Cameron Delport’s great 100 in T20 cricket against the Knights
■Cody Chetty’s maiden franchise 100 and averaging 40 in 4 day cricket.
■Keshav Maharaj’s career best of 5 for 11 for the Dolphins vs. Titans
■Daryn Smit’s strike rate in T20 cricket at 162”.

Another key highlight has been the significant national representation across all the teams. In total 10 out of the contracted squad of 18 has played representative cricket for SA this season. This is indicative of the talent available throughout our pipeline.

But clearly more consistent, match winning team performances are required, and this remains our challenge for the new season.

The addition of Morne van Wyk will strengthens the leadership group and we look forward to him sharing his experience and winning know-how to our squad whose average age is 24.

Management and the coaching staff believe that we are on the cusp of great things and are looking forward to the new season.”

It is still our intention to recruit overseas professionals again this season to further add the necessary experience. We await Cricket South Africa’s confirmation on the national contracted players”.

Fa-eez Jaffar, President of KZNCU, commented, “This squad is a young and talented squad. Many of these players have worked hard at their game and have come through the ranks. Some of these players have been rewarded for their hard work and have had the opportunity to play at a higher level. The addition of Morne van Wyk adds experience to the team and solidifies our top order. We at KZN Cricket Union and the KZN Cricket PTY are committed to backing our team for the coming season.”
Dolphins Cricket CEO Jesse Chellan is confident they have enough potential in their squad to build a strong team next season.

On Monday, the Dolphins released the names of the 17 players they have contracted for the 2013/14 campaign.

The biggest absentee is star Proteas batsman Hashim Amla, who announced last month that he would be leaving Durban for the Cobras, in Cape Town.

Also missing is Lonwabo Tsotsobe, but Chellan said he had not yet been informed about the future of the left-arm seamer.

"I saw in a press release from Cricket SA that he's listed to play for the Lions, but I've requested from CSA that they send me all the franchise listed players who have CSA contracts.

"I don't have any formal notification about it, but it does look like he won't be here," he said.

Amla did not feature for the franchise last season because of his national commitments, and Tsotsobe played in only the One Day Cup series.

The Dolphins will have only two current national players on their books in limited-overs batting specialist David Miller and seam bowler Kyle Abbott.

Abbott had a storming induction to test cricket earlier this year, when he claimed nine wickets on debut against Pakistan in Centurion.

Amla's older brother Ahmed is also no longer part of the set-up, after announcing his retirement, and Dane Paterson has moved on.

The Dolphins, under new coach Lance Klusener, ended third in the Sunfoil Series this season after winning four games, more than they had done in the
previous three seasons.

However, they disappointed in the 50-over and 20-over competitions, finishing fifth in both.

"Although our results have not always shown it, the squad is maturing and starting to deliver on its potential," Chellan said.

"The only new signing is veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Morne van Wyk, who joined from the Knights."

Chellan said Van Wyk would strengthen their leadership group and he believed the player's experience and "winning know-how" would be a valuable addition to
the team.

"We just need to see some of the youngsters we have, to build on the potential, just like Kyle did last season by taking 49 wickets," he said.

"Clearly, more consistent, match-winning team performances are required, and this remains our challenge for the new season."

HIGHVELD LIONS

The bizhub Highveld Lions have pleasure in announcing the contracted squad for 2013/14.

“The team has had a phenomenal season and we were happy to keep the bigger pool of players consistent, as this allows for continuity. The squad shows the inclusion of some younger players that have been on the fringe of the franchise for the past couple of years and we welcome them into the side. I believe that we have the squad to build on the successes of the 2012/13 season and look forward to see the progress of these individuals as a unit,” said Cassim Docrat, Chief Executive Officer.

Head Coach, Geoffrey Toyana, is excited about the potential this group of players have. “I have personal insight into the cricket abilities of these players and can tell you now that this squad has what it takes to have another magical season. I am also happy to welcome into the side Lopsy (Lowabo Tsotsobe) who has opted to play for the bizhub Highveld Lions this year. He has a tremendous amount of ability and I believe that he will bring experience and guidance to some of the younger players in our squad,” Toyana said.

The side reconvenes at the end of the month to start their off-season programme. “There is a lot of hard work ahead of us and we will have to put in the work if we want to impress on both the international and domestic stage. We have the players to achieve this, the ball is now in our court,” Toyana added.

Zander de Bruyn & Dale Deeb lost their contracts.

Walter Appointed Head Coach of the Nashua Titans

THE Easterns Titans franchise has announced the appointment of Rob Walter as the new Nashua Titans coach. Easterns Titans franchise Chairman Vincent Sinovich made the announcement at a media briefing at SuperSport Park, in Centurion, on Tuesday 21, May 2013.

Walter takes over from Matthew Maynard who has led the side for the past two seasons but opted not to renew his contract citing personal reasons.

Walter said: "To be joining the Nashua Titans again is something of a second homecoming for me and to be appointed as head coach is something that I have aspired to since my first day at the Titans in 1999. It is a franchise whose players, staff and set-up I know intimately and I am hugely excited to be given the opportunity to be part of shaping the future of what has already been a very successful franchise."

Walter previously worked with the Nashua Titans under Dave Nosworthy.

Walter has been the Proteas Fitness trainer for the last six years and more recently has doubled up as fielding coach as well. He is also part of the coaching staff of the Pune Warriors India franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Walter’s first matches in charge will be during the pre-season matches locally in August. The Champions League scheduled for September/October in India will be his first official assignment.

Walter will be able to call on the services of senior players next season such as captain Henry Davids, Albie Morkel, Ethy Mbhalati and Jacques Rudolph.

The Chairman, Vincent Sinovich commented: “When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on Rob Walter. Rob is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. He has shown this at national level,” said Sinovich.

“He was part of the support staff at the start of the franchise system in 2003 and assisted with the development of young players. Rob inherits a first-class group of players who have performed consistently at the highest level and he will continue to build the Titans brand," continued Sinovich.

Commenting on the appointment, Chief Executive Officer, Jacques Faul said: “His hard-working style and hard determination are characteristics we value at the franchise. He has impressed as a fitness trainer for many years now and we strongly believe he will be able to take up from where Matthew left off by continuing the franchise’s achievement.”

“The committee felt that Rob has been privileged to be in some of the best change rooms in the world, working together with very good coaches and he will bring this valuable knowledge to the Franchise,” continued Faul.

Walter’s contract will commence on 1 July 2013.

Pieter Malan & Tumelo Modibe have lost their contracts. Paul Harris & Martin van Jaarsveld retired. Rudolph & A.Morkel drop down from CSA Contracts. Qaasim Adams joins from the Cobras and right-arm quick JP de Villiers is contracted for the 1st time from Northerns amatuer and CBC Old Boys CC.

Monde Zondeki officially announced his retirement a couple of days ago.
Nice fat pay-off with a franchise contract without playing last season. :)

But in all seriousness remember him breaking through as a youngster with real gas and intent. Just didn't seem to have the work ethic or luck with injuries.

He will remember that Headingley partnership with Gary Kirsten very fondly.

Morne Van Wyk will take over the captaincy of the Dolphins for the next 2 seasons after joining them. Not sure if that is good news for Daryn Smit from a keeping perspective now as well particularly in the 1-day game.

Also just the Cobras to release contracted squad.

Squads have already started pre-season for a couple of weeks.

From the 5 squads announced just really Craig Kirsten & Daryn Dupavillon (both Dolphins), Anrich Nortje (Warriors) and Corne Dry (Knights) without central contracts from young talented players in between franchise cricket and having to earn their franchise contracts with results for their amateur teams after leaving school. All in pre-season with franchises though and all fast bowlers.

With regards to the Cobras... Jan Frylinck (left-arm quick) and David Bedingham (Bat) may fall in the same category as above but we will see when they announce their squad.

Would possibly like to see schoolboys Clyde Fortuin (keeper/bat) & Dayyaan Galiem all-rounder) (both Western Province), Greg Oldfield (bat) (KZN Inland), Ryan Rickelton (bat) & Kagiso Rabada (right-arm quick) (both Gauteng) play amateur cricket next season if they can fit it in amongst their school work and other cricket duties (school, Coke & Cubs Week & SA u19). Obviously need to produce the goods still though.

It pains me to say it, but the Lions team looks really strong this season! As a die-hard Titans supporter, our team still looks very strong on paper, so keeping fingers crossed for the coming season.

Looking forward to seeing what they can do under the leadership of Walter.

Amla's decision is a major blow to the Dolphin's, but from what I've heard it's the troubles have been brewing for a while!

Here's to hoping that the Cobras will announce their team soon!

Nothing exciting done by the Cobras re: contracted squad. Rather want the young talent to prove themselves in amateur cricket first. Players like batsmen Bedingham & J.Smith along with fast bowlers Frylinck & Muller all playing club cricket in England though. Fortuin along with Smith and Galiem in SA under 19 mix. Last season for senior players Kemp and Langeveldt in my view.

COBRAS SQUAD

Nationally contracted: Graeme Smith (32), Hashim Amla (30), Jacques Kallis (38), JP Duminy (29), Robin Peterson (34), Vernon Philander (28), Dale Steyn (30), Rory Kleinveldt (30)

There was a SA 'A' camp for fitness tests done in the last few days in prep for Australia and India 'A'. Obviously the squad were minus potential players like Elgar, de Kock, Ingram, Miller, Behardien, Phangiso, Morris & Kleinveldt. Also a Sri Lanka ODI series will co-incide with Austalia 'A' tests.

Squad attended HPC in Pretoria.
