Just read about the possible departure from Somerset of Jos Buttler. As has been said it was always inevitable that one of these two - Kieswetter or Buttler - would ultimately have to move on as both seem keen and determined to continue improving their wicket-keeping and become the main keeper-batsman at a County even if that means a move away from Taunton. While there was a slight exaggeration from Dave Nosworthy who compared this situation to that of having Gilchrist and Boucher in the same squad, you got the picture in so much as Somerset have had a very difficult decision in deciding which one of these two would get the nod more frequently. I thought Buttler would keep permanently in the shorter formats, but if he hasn't performed then Somerset are obliged to switch to Kieswetter. They are both players deserving of regular first team cricket, and if they are both pursuing the dream of wearing the gloves, one of them had to move. I'm slightly surprised that it's Buttler that's likely to be moving.

He seemed a bit pissed-off tonight, body-language wasn't right. Has Jos not performed? Wasn't aware of any howlers with the gloves.

Well they promised Buttler would get the gloves for all the limited overs stuff, but they went back to Kiesy for this game. I'm guessing the fact that they went back on their words is the reason that article appeared on Cricinfo. Somerset have come out and said that it's not true (although I guess they would for now) so at the moment it's still just rumours.

Like I said, I still think Kies is the better gloveman, and Somerset clearly agree, at least to an extent, which is why he's still the predominant wicketkeeper. I mean, it's not like CK isn't worth his salt as a specialist batsman, so there's no major reason for them to stick with him if they thought Jos was superior.

Edit: My point in the first sentence being that they must've been unimpressed by Buttler so far in the T20's to go back to Craig.

I'm not personally suggesting he hasn't performed but that is the only reason you would take the gloves off him especially in a format where he is considered the most appropriate candidate for the national side. If he has done a decent job then I think he has a right to feel more than a tad aggrieved. I am a fan of having the best gloveman in the squad as your wicket-keeper regardless of strengths elsewhere. I always felt James Foster was very unfairly dropped from the England T20 side because of his batting, when that is pretty decent but his keeping is worth a heck of a lot to a side in 20 overs.

Was at Northampton tonight for that one. Fairly average game of cricket if we're honest and I've also contrived to lose my glasses somewhere in the process. Looking forward to driving home wearing sunnies.

They actually went back to Kies a short while ago. Tonight was meant to be the make or break game though for some reason. I'm guessing it's because it's the one after Jos has aired his complaints.

He's hardly setting the world on fire domestically though. Shame.

I think, Lancs, Worcs, Mddx, Glos, Glam & Derby would all want him.
But would Buttler want to move to any of these counties if they were stuck in the second division? I would love Buttler at Glos and it makes sense geographically but it would be a big move to make as he would be likely stuck in division 2 and not challenging in the OD competitions. Finances are extremely tight at a lot of these counties- Worcs, Glos, Glam, Derby.

Lancashire maybe if they get promoted but Alex Davies is meant to be a potentially very good wicketkeeper batsman. If that is true it wouldn't make much sense to bring Buttler in.
Middlesex a possibility as Simpson is one of the poorer wkbats in div 1. Rossington doesn't look great as a keeper but has batting talent.

Just depends how these counties rate their keepers coming through.

Sussex could be an option as Brown is meh, and Prior doesn't keep when he comes back anyway most of the time and as they play different formats of the game for England would work well.

How long is Read gonna go on at Notts? They normally pick up the England players.

Maybe Northants if they get promoted as Murphy is average. Again could be about how they rate Duckett.

Warwickshire maybe but Ambrose is only 30 and has been in great form this season.

I'd say Sussex, Middlesex or Lancashire most likely.

Finn should be playing for Middlesex this week. Flower & Cook must have decided before today that he wouldn't be playing in this test, and he needs as much proper cricket as possible to find some form. Annoying lack of foresight.

He's on the way down isn't he? Better than nothing and we don't know for sure when the decision was taken to change - I suspect it wasn't as early as 36 hours ago.

hell of a knock by the yorkshire kid. Seems to have the right idea about making it count when the going is good. Should be the easiest thing about batting but so often people give it away when there are hundreds of runs to be made against a tiring attack on a good wicket.

It probably wasn't. But I think it should have been after his performance at Trent Bridge, the obvious lack of trust from his captain, and I don't really see how things might have changed in the last 48 hours or whatever it is.

Final check on the pitch?

Would've been extremely odd to name him in the squad one day then send him away the next so once he was named they couldn't really remove him that soon.
