I'd pick Sanga for the long haul; if I knew I was getting their absolute best for the next match then it'd probably be Pietersen. Probably.
GIMP has this absolutely spot on by the way.

Yeah I came here to say how shocked I am to see that GIMH has made a reasonable and informed cricket post for once.

    Less of it please.

Don't worry, I doubt it will happen again.

Does anyone actually come close to Sanga's record after he dropped the gloves?

    68 Matches, 7175 runs, 25 Centuries@68.33

That is a ****ing awesome record no matter how you look at it.

Pietersen's name should be up there with the few genuine genius's along side Viv, Lara and Tendulkar. Unfortunately he never bothered to eliminate his propensity to play half an innings and toss his wicket away with an ill judged shot. His attitude to criticism has always been "That's the way I play the game".
Although I think he's more talented than Sanga there's no real argument for voting for him.

Based on that are we going to concede that he is streets ahead of Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Kallis and even Hobbs, Hutton, Sobers et al. also?

I'm not saying he is better than all of them. Certainly not streets ahead. Average is not the only thing that contributes to the greatness of a player, but he certainly is an ATG middle order batsman.

Personally of the current (modern era) greats I'd rank them Kallis, Ponting, Tendulkar, Lara, Sangakkara. Very subject to change, and not much difference between them. Do rank Hobbs, Hutton and Sobers ahead of all of them though, among others.

Aren't you the guy who rates Sutcliffe higher than Hutton?

Surprised to see you specifically mention Hutton and not Sutcliffe then, even if you did mention "among others".

Bruce Mitchell has got both of them covered though obviously.
