Will 40 be the new 50?

Due to improved bowling standards and flawed batting techniques (T20 and all), will an average of 40 become the standard average for a world class batsman?

This is all part of a ploy to somehow make sense of Philander's bowling average isnt it?
"Well for batsmen, 40 is the new 50 so fir bowlers, 15 is the new 25, so Philander's not all that exceptional"

New Aussie pacers, Philander, Finn and some good ones are soon to come through like Topley. Pakistan also has some decent young pacers and we have managed to get rid of Gul (hopefully).

Some of the tests pitches in Australia (Melbourne,Hobart and WACA) have definitely had more in them for the quicks in the last couple of years but they havent done Michael Clarke too much harm

AB's average of 40 against the WIs in the 80s would be worth about 150 now.

No.

Pitches are still fairly flat which balances it out. Batsmen with proper techniques still score heaps of runs.

What you're really asking here is "will the youth of today continue in their passionate quest to embrace mediocrity?". The answer is probably.

It'd be cool if we kept the lid on the expectations of our Aussie pace men. Pattinson looks the most likely but he's still got a fair way to go and that includes staying fit. Its true we have a lot of options but very few dead cert choices. So one game we might have Starc and next we have Johnson in his place for example. We have too may guys who get injured (Harris, Cummins etc) and young players who haven't quite made it. Its not an ideal situation and one that wont frighten the best batting sides atm.
