A team of members from Eversley Cricket Club are taking on the challenge of cycling from Eversley in north Hampshire to Paris at Easter.

The team of cricketers – appropriately of 11 – will be leaving Eversley Cricket Club on the morning of Friday, March 29, and plan to arrive in Paris on Easter Sunday evening, March 31.

On the way, the team will be taking in the sights of Godalming, Brighton, Newhaven, Dieppe, Vernon, Poissy and finally the Arc de Triomphe. The distance is some 320 miles.

The purpose of the ride is to raise funds for Eversley Cricket Club, the Eversley Sports Association (ESA), a registered charity (1142974), and the renowned Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Funds for the ECC / ESA are crucial to help with the upkeep of the grounds and much needed new equipment which in turn will help increase sporting participation and excellence in the local area.

Eversley CC is a member of the ESA along with Eversley & California FC.

Eversley, which first played in 1787 and celebrated its 225th anniversary last year, is one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world. The first team won promotion last season to Division One of the Thames Valley League and the club puts out four league sides on Saturdays, two adult sides on Sundays along with a ladies' team, and has a thriving colts section of over 250 youngsters.

ECC chairman Gary Ford is a veteran of cycle rides to Paris, having pedalled there for charity at least six times in recent years.

He said: "The idea for this cycle ride has been taken up enthusiastically by club members and a great team has volunteered to ride and to act in support roles.

"I know from bitter experience that it is a tough challenge, but with full support from everyone, I am sure we can exceed our initial target of £6,000.

"This will help to provide better playing facilities for all our cricketers, young or old and benefit a very worthwhile cancer charity."

Eversley's is an absolutely delightful ground - how often does a big hit clear the road and land in the Frog and Wicket car park?

Not as many times as you may have thought.

However, on the 31st May we play Lashings World XI I am sure there will be a number of big hits into the pub car park and around the ground.

Look out for a post on this in the next few weeks and come watch if you can
