Thought he was quite talented, myself. On the occasions I saw him bowl, always seemed to be feeling his way back after injury. Didn't move the ball a lot but was quick and hit the seam, heavy ball, etc.

On the gun, I never saw him bowl higher than mid-140's but I assumed, due to aforementioned injury history, that he was bowling within himself a bit anyway. And, of course, that's well quick enough anyway.

Despite having a nice strong action and once bowling pretty quickly I don't think Butler would be in my top 10 NZ disappointments of the last decade. Deserves recognition for the way he's fought back from injury though.

Definitely. I'm pretty sure at one stage I saw on the news he was planning to come back as a batsman that bowled some off spin of all things, but then he reemerged a couple of years later still a seamer but able to hit the ball a long way too.

Jagging it off the pitch and through the gate is the archetypal Butler dismissal, you'd say, as in that 2003 v 2013 video.

Yeah I think that's right, then Richard Sherlock in a 2004 A tour one-dayer in SA. One day, a South African Robelinda will emerge and give us that sweet viewing.

Speaking of which, was wondering what that list would be. Off the top of my head:

    Bond
    Sinclair
    Franklin
    Ryder
    H Marshall
    Tuffey
    .
    .
    .
    .

Some other names: Fulton, How, Cumming, Cairns, Vincent, Oram

can't believe I'm saying this, but I wouldn't mind Butler in the test team as a 4th seamer.

If we go with 4 pace bowlers, McCleneghan is probably first in line though.

In some ways agree - would have been nice if he could have remained a test wicketkeeper. Though on the field I think he's done reasonably well for us all things told.

Would put in a similar boat to Butler - if things hadn't gone wrong he might have been a good test bowler for us.

Perhaps underperformed compared to his apparent ball-striking ability however problems with the mental side of the game are valid too. Still had a high test average (though sometimes I can't for the life of me remember how).

Surprisingly am struggling to think of more names so Adams and Butler starting to look like candidates.

edit: actually I'd say Bond is our biggest disappointment.

    My Test Team

    1. McCullum
    2. Flynn or Guptill (toss a coin)
    3. Williamson
    4. Taylor
    5. Brownlie
    6. Watling
    7. Munro
    8. Butler
    9. Bracewell
    10. Southee
    11. Boult

Plenty of bowling options. This is the key to winning Tests.

    yeah I know.

Didn't realise he could bat these days, which is a big plus. Also, after watching that video he looks nice and consistent.

Even if he is just a line and length bowler, as long as he's tight that's not much of a loss vs Chris Martin or a spinner.

He is not international standard and will get found out in this tour if he plays enough games.

If he plays the ODIs then in at least one game he will go for more than 70.

Proudly against the bring back Bennett movement since he is injury prone and won't last 5 days.
