Whinging Poms?

Whinging Poms?

In this feature Martin tells the story of England's unhappy tour of Australia in 1958/59.

Sounds like the English press did rather more whinging than the players.

All before my time, but it seems that our lack of quality openers did for us, so the talented middle order were usually facing the new ball. And perhaps there was a dash of complacency. Faced with a tougher ordeal than expected, maybe they simply didn't have the stomach for it.

Another belter, fred.

Does show that cricket's a game played on cut strips, not in the pages of Wisden; England's attack practically reads like a who's who of our postwar bowling greats and, on paper, at least looks a match for the home battery.

& another (near) namesake for that thread: John Mortimore, who didn't create such a compelling case for the defence as Rumpole might've.
