The quintessence of cricket

I think it's more the way people use stats in debates and as validation that people hate, rather than the fact there's so much out there that people so inclined can investigate/play around with.
Yeah, I love to rummage through records and stats occasionally. Although I'll admit I'm probably a bit sad.

Either a fast bowler completely squaring a batsman up and getting him to nick to the slips, or a high-quality bouncer.

Whatever it takes!!!
As a wicket-keeper, I absolutely enjoyed it when I was taking the balls smack right in the palm of my gloves, off spinners or seamers alike... Also, effecting a run out or stumping or basically just breaking the stumps with my gloves whilst holding the ball was always fun..

Brumby nailed it from the start, nothing like that that glorious sound.

Love being at the first morning of a test though, with Scoreboard at 0-0 and that ever so English voice welcoming out the sides.

I've always found the moment the ball is traveling from an edge towards the slips to be perhaps the most tense part of cricket. Time seems to slow down at times as the ball travels from the edge towards first slip. Everyones known what's happened, and are just weighting for the inevitable, which often doesn't occur. When your favourite player's bowling it's a mixture of excitement and heart in the mouth time, as you weight for the ball to be caught. While when your favourite batsman is batting, it's a moment of despair with a tiny bit of hope that the ball will be grassed.
This, also the first morning of a test match in the crowd or on tv, when there is everything is even and there is everything to play for.
Just sitting in the crowd and looking out onto that lush green field.

Yes very true. The first morning before the play starts as you start settling down in your seats, may e take out the flask for a steaming cup of tea in Delhi's winter with steam coming out of moth and nostrils, rubbing your hands together as much in anticipation of the umpires walking out as to keep them warm and the. That sense of great excitement as Imran starts running in to Gavaskar ,,,,,,

That feeling when your side is doing well in the field defending a target, a new batsmen walks in and looks right at home, perfectly timing the ball for a couple of boundaries. Suddenly everyone on the field is thinking the same thing, the target doesn't look that distant anymore, chirping in the infield dies down, misfields occur and the captain has chin resting on his hand. The entire mood and atmosphere changes within just a couple of minutes. It's pretty surreal.

Slow motion of Edge to slips such a great call. Was going to say batsman being clean bowled but now that I think about it, the time going slower between edge and catch/drop is the winner for me.

Its much the same if you are an opening batsman yourself and facing the first ball of the match. I always had a tingling feeling and hoped for a half volley around the off stump first up. or a ball pitched outside the stumps that I could cover up to and let go. That one ball or so that you let go past you as you get to move your feet around settles the nerves and the you are able to focus on the bowler;s hand and track the ball coming towards you much better thereafter.

Capitalised E in 'edge' can only mean:

The thud of the ball crashing into mic'ed stumps in the world series games in Aus in 80s/early 90s.

Donald walking, quacking back after a duck in Aus/SA.

When specialist batsmen bowl in test matches. Even better if they have a trundle in a one day game.

I love how teams spend so much time working out their strongest bowling lineup but are then happy to throw the ball after 50 overs to someone who rarely bowls and would not even make first class cricket as a bowler, simply because the specialist bowlers in the team are struggling. Even better is when they bowl slow medium pace.

It was enjoyable seeing Hussey and Ponting having a bowl again in recent years.
