***Official*** Australia in India 2012/13

I think the strength of Australia's position is being overstated. I'd even call India a hair ahead (400AO par)...
Nah no way...even the Indian commentators were saying all day that 300 would be a good score.

The main issue with the pitch is not the amount of turn offered but the variable bounce. By way of example, in the first session, Ashwin bowled two deliveries which landed on a very similar length.

The first spun past Warner's bat and hit Dhoni in the collarbone. The second went practically underground and hit Watson on the shin plumb in front.

When the bounce is already that variable on the first day, you DO NOT want to be the team batting last. And when the bounce become random like that it is actually the pacemen, not the spinners, who pose the greatest threat because you have no time to readjust to the unexpected bounce (or lack thereof).

I would argue that Australia are comfortably ahead at present and appear likely to make at least 355, which is well above par.

That would mean India would need to make 400+ against a potent 4-prong pace attack, plus two handy spinners in Lyon and Clarke, to try to ensure they are not chasing an out-of-reach total.

And if Australia can get to 400 in the morning it will take something extremely special from India not to lose the Test.

I should say though that the first session tomorrow will have a massive impact on the shape of the Test.

If India run through the tail and limit Australia to 335 they will take momentum out of that and could turn the match on its head.

If, on the other hand, Australia manage to keep India in the field for most of the first session and get the score up to 400 then they will be incredibly hard to beat from there.

It was interesting to note that the ball did reverse swing for Kumar in particular, but his pace was too gentle to take advantage of it. If Starc, Siddle and Pattinson get the ball reversing at 140-145kmh it will be tough going.

All in all it was a great day's play and well worth me getting up at 4am

Had to hit the sack when we were 5 for so great work from Clarkeh and Moz to get to 300. What can the Aussie bowlers do on that pitch is the big question now.

He was out bat pad on about 30 odd tbh. However, hot spot was inconclusive on referral.

This Kumar fella is cannon fodder. If you are going to bowl at 130kmh in Test cricket you need height or consistent swing (preferably both).

He's a specialist swing bowler, and to be fair to him, this pitch is worse than just a flat deck to a specialist swing bowler. There is no moisture whatsoever. Bhuvneshwar never stood a chance on this wicket and should never have been picked.

There's really no use for any fast bowler other than a reverse swing specialist on this pitch.

It was his lack of pace through the air that really hurt him though...he was literally struggling to exceed 130kmh. Even when he got it to swing the batsmen seemed to have forever to play for that swing.

It will be a whole different prospect if Starc and Pattinson start swinging it at 145kmh. I've got a feeling Starc could have a breakthrough series here.
