Disappointed but I guess it's good to see him sticking to his goals. Hope he comes back soon, though, because's he's already 28, which is usually the beginning of the peak years for a batsman.

I also hope he comes back soon, because he looks so horrible playing against domestix bowlers at the moment.

McCullum moving into the middle order when he's our best opener (damning with faint praise etc) and Flynn moving to open when he's been poop in the top order previously and isn't prolific at 4-6 is so headdesk.

I guess we'll be seeing this team then if no Vettori

    Flynn
    Fulton/Guptill
    Williamson
    Taylor
    McCullum (c)
    Brownlie
    Watling (wk)
    Bracewell
    Southee
    Boult
    Spinner

Imagine having Flynn, Fulton, and Sinclair as our top three. FFS, literally.

    My ideal team, without Ryder/Vettori:

    1. Daniel Flynn
    2. Brendon McCullum (c)
    3. Kane Williamson
    4. Ross Taylor
    5. Dean Brownlie
    6. BJ Watling
    7. Luke Ronchi+
    8. Doug Bracewell
    9. Tim Southee
    10. Trent Boult
    11. Spinner (Most probably, Bruce Martin)

    Yup agree with this.

Will be struggling with just Williamson as fifth bowler though.

Alderson on picking Nathan McCullum as the test spinner. I actually quite like the idea. Otherwise I would like an all pace attack with McClenaghan, Boult, Bracewell & Southee. Williamson & Guptill can offer spin.

    My test side:

    Guptill
    Flynn
    McCullum
    Taylor
    Williamson
    Brownlie
    Watling +
    Bracewell
    Southee
    Boult
    McLenaghan

    12th man: N McCullum

Yeah look we don't need a specialist fielder in tests.

Alderson has gone crazy. Bracket NcCullum with Ellis as a test allrounder who:
    • won't score runs
    • won't take wickets
    • at best, may bowl some overs that don't concede many runs

If we want someone to fill in for Vettori, bowl a bit of spin and bat well enough to allow us to play four seamers, then surely Todd Astle is the man.

Still not sure if that's the way I'd go, but definitely not NcCullum.

Reality - our spinners suck. We don't have one worth picking. Can we move on now? Imagine trying to explain to an american baseball fan the idea of picking a far inferior player purely on the basis that he bowls the ball much slower than his competition. It starts to sound pretty stupid from that angle.

NcCullum might be as good as any other option, tbh. Batting is a tad underrated. And he'll probably keep it tight. Sad state of affairs though when he becomes a geniune spinning option.

Agree. Don't let NcCullum anywhere near the test side even if he is part of the Love boat.

Interesting article from Victor Marks in today's Observer ahead of the tour.

Effectively says NZ used to maximise their talent to compete but are failing to do so now. Also makes the very reasonable point that teams don't necessarily have to love each other to pull in the same direction:

Had it with Ryder. He can take his talents and attitude to the t20 gravy train. I want players who want to play and will take it seriously when they do.
