Good planning from England to keep Root, who is an opener right(?), at six early on. Really doesn't look a test opener atm.

Looked much more fluid today has kevin, though not without a brainless moment or two.

Kiwis have been sharp around the boundary.

Martin WAG. Been impressed with him today - have to say he's looked far more threatening than Vettori has in the last few years.

Prior in now; we simply have to get him early. Could be the difference between 450+ and 400.

Reading the cricinfo commentary you'd think Bartin wasn't turning the ball at all- not only does the commentary focus exclusively on poor batting when ball beats bat, it also makes several specific mentions of the fact he isn't turning it

If Bartin is suddenly getting this amount of turn, what's Panesar going to do to NZ's batsmen?

ffs McMillan and Nash. I could do without more NZ commentators who think the keys to good bowling are "engaging with the batsman" and "having a word".

Just a bit susceptible to dragging them short is Martin. Doesn't quite have the control on the quicker one.

Prior been pretty lucky so far. Barely hit anything near the middle. Don't know why Wagner's now bowling around the wicket to him - he's shanked a pull shot and sliced some drives airily from over the wicket; just plug away for a bit and see what happens.

Good session for us though it would have been better if Watling could have held that catch. Perhaps his first significant error where you wonder if a better, more experienced keeper, would have taken the catch. I have noticed he does slightly struggle with getting up to take high catches from pace bowlers - missed a bouncer from Boult in Dunedin that most keepers would have gathered imo. Generally though Watling's keeping has been tidy and unnoticeable since he took the job, which is just the way we like it.

Would be great to dismiss England in the next session for around 430 though I can still easily see them piling up 500. Though in saying that, the longer England bat, presumably the higher chance we have of escaping with a draw.
