I read the thread on how to manage Australian bowling stocks and it made me wonder why these two sides, who believe themselves to have reserve bowlers of similar quality (or at least in the same ballpark) to their own frontliners*, don't use the same management.

England always play their first XI unless facing Bangladesh. Broad, Bresnan and Swann are players with ongoing issues but have never to my knowledge been given a quick break with Finn or Panesar or whoever coming in to shoulder the mantle.

NZ don't either, though in fairness Southee, Boult and Bracewell haven't shown themselves to be very injury prone at all when it relates to their workloads (fielding and cleaning up glass another matter). Boult had a lot of issues a few years back but touch wood, they aren't such a major threat anymore because he has been fit for some time.

Do these teams not believe in the strategy or do they just prefer to play the first XI at every opportunity? I've noticed a lot of Australian posters lately have been saying rotation, like it or not, is going to become a necessity.

As an NZ fan the prospect of bowling all our young bowlers into hospital one by one like the 90s does worry me. I'm undecided on rotation though considering our world ranking. How do the English posters feel? Are Australia mad or are they on to something?

*$10 on someone not reading that properly and going on about how amazing some random NSW bowler is compared to the England/NZ reserves

You should have brought it out to the Forbury Park trots in south Dunedin tonight and thrown the $30 away there. I would have even bought you a pottle of wedges.

Yeah I'm surprised at the number of people giving him a bit of a pass just because he didn't get out in a typically "soft" way - alright, it's not quite chipping one to short extra and holding the pose but it was still a pretty limp shot to a back of a length ball doing the sum total of not all that much.

Dare say the fact the guy has played a grand total of 2 tests has played a factor in him not copping as much **** as Bell, Cook and Prior.

Just watching a highlight package, does Wagner make that annoying cry as the batsman hits the ball only when he goes for four, or every ball?

We're nigh on an innings behind in one day on the sort of pitch we should dominate on against one of the worst non-minnow teams in the history of Test cricket.

If it's not even in your top ten lets hear some England performances that are worse than that.

England did bowler rotation in Tests last summer.

Beyond that, it's more something that's seen as a necessity for young bowlers. Sports science seems to be telling us that there's simply too much cricket scheduled for fast bowlers under 25 or so to actually handle, and that they'll develop (possibly long-term) injuries if they play it all. Different story for blokes over 25, who are more just at risk of fatigue and niggles, and don't need to be managed as much.

That only leaves Finn at risk, and he's never really been a guaranteed selection anyway.
