They are definitely an great show of respect. Almost brought a tear to my eye when the South Africas formed one for Ponting.

I don't mean to sound horrible but I'm not sure that Hussey really deserved one. Don't get me wrong, he has been a champion for Austalia and well deserving of handshakes from everyone when he gets out for the last time. But if anyone and everyone gets a guard of honour when they retire it kind of loses it's meaning.

Yeah they stood along either side of the pitch before he took block and gave him three cheers. Woodfull did the same thing for Hobbs when he retired.

Better saved for the second innings, surely - unless Sri Lanka were expecting to lose by an innings, as England were in 1948 (we'd just been rolled for 52, so it was a reasonable assumption). And more appropriate for someone who's played at least 100 Tests, although clearly a matter for the fielding side.

I thought the ODI appearance came during the WC which was before his final Test.

You are correct. I was misremembering. His last appearance was indeed that South African Test.

Has there been many greats who played their last Test match against Australia over the past 20 years AND announced retirement before the Test? I can't think of any at all.
