SL & WI in OZ 2013 - short formats

The biggest compliment I can give Rohrer is that he is the closest thing in domestic short form cricket to Mike Hussey. I nearly included him but I'm a Bailever (doesn't work does it) so he makes my team as captain at number 5, one spot higher than he stupidly currently bats for Hobart.

So our squad for the first 2 ODI's.

George Bailey (capt), Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Phil Hughes, David Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc.

The first thing that annoys me is Cutting being picked in his worst format. Haddin is a meh selection, I don't really want him opening, I would rather a younger guy take his spot. Henriques and Faulkner are unlucky.

From the squad chosen, I would probably go for:

1. Finch 2. Hughes 3. Khawaja 4. Dussey 5 Bailey 6 Haddin 7 Maxwell 8 Johnson 9 Starc 10 McKay 11 Doherty

Actually not really sure if its wise getting 10 overs out of Maxwell and Dussey, further illustrating why Henriques at 7 would be the ideal option.

While it looks bad on first viewing, I don't actually think the squad is as bad as I first felt. Khawaja and Cutting are the only real names there that don't warrant a spot.

In Australia's strongest t20 line up, I don't think Bailey has a place. Ben Rohrer would be better suited to that finishing/hard running type. Better fielder too.
I think I said this last year. Standing by it #bigben4evr

I'm putting up my flame shield here, but I think having a specialist captain (and to be honest, Bailey probably wouldn't be THAT far from making the T20i side on batting alone) isn't as bad of an idea as you might think. Hear me out.
specialist keeper before specialist captain itbt

Swap Hughes and Usman around. Don't really like Dussey at 4 or Maxwell at 7 but what are you gonna do

Yeah I almost swapped Hughes and Khawaja around too, probably a good move. Don't like Duss at 4 either, but I don't like him in the team full stop.

20 overs of spin from Doherty, Dussey and Maxwell seems a bit of a stretch for me. But I guess there aren't many alternatives...

Team certainly isn't short of part time spin options...Could do with some Watto like seamers though.

I don't have a major problem with Bailey being in the ODI team, but he shouldn't be captain over Haddin.

Upon reflection, maybe he probably should be captain if he's in there, just to ensure continuity between the t20 and ODI sides. But what bugs me is that the captain should be an established member who has played a lot, and Bailey hasn't.

Bailey hasn't exactly disgraced himself in his ODI's so far, and he's not into Chris Simpson territory as a specialist captain in the shorter forms.

Must say though it's no wonder ODI crowds are down when you look at that 13-man squad.

I think with the team we're sending out for the first two ODers, this is unavoidable, at least you want to give it to Starceh

but i assume you're also talking about bailey and t20

Good to see Hughes get a game. Should have been in the ODI team earlier IMO.

Will be interesting who makes Aussie Squad for the Champions Trophy since it's right before the Ashes.
