Rare Bradman video shows unofficial honeymoon tour

Some 'new' footage of Bradman playing during the 1932 tour of Canada has been released recently by the Australian National Film and Sound Archive.

It is about 13 minutes long with the best footage happening after the 6th minute mark. It features the best view of the great Arthur Mailey and Stan McCabe bowling we are ever likely to see, and of course Bradman himself. It is a shame that the action of each player is rather brief, but the camera is so close that we are to see quite clearly that most of the power in Bradman's shots came from the 'wrist-snap' of his bottom-hand.

Rare Bradman video shows unofficial honeymoon tour

Cricket lovers still pining after Ricky Ponting's retirement now have a little something to ease the pain – a rare film featuring Sir Donald Bradman in action.

The 13 minute black and white film titled Australi-ans in Toronto shows the cricket legend taking part in matches against Canadian teams in 1932.

Captured by the Ontario Motion Picture Bureau, it is believed to be only one of two known surviving films depicting Bradman at play somewhere other than Australia or the British Isles.

Bradman was visiting Toronto as part of a 51-match tour organised by former Australian Test leg spinner Arthur Mailey, who had gathered a team of past and present cricketers including lower level grade players.

The tour also acted as an unofficial honeymoon for Bradman and his new wife Jessie Menzies, who joined the touring party at Bradman's request.

The film was released by the National Film and Sound Archive, whose curator Simon Smith said the archive was happy to share the clip made at a time when “the spirit of cricket was as important as the result”.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Thanks for sharing this Watson.

I'm a massive fan of old footage of cricket. This is great.

Eyes not spreadsheets
Can we use this footage to check the size of the ground and to debate on any 3rd umpire run outs?

Jessie's a bit of a minx, but I don't think she's a 99.94.

I heard that she's not just a minx, but rather a sassy minx ?

(I have a feeling that we've just crossed some kind of line...)
