The top order failing is depressingly predictable. The tail capitulating is understandable given the bowlers they were facing, but still depressingly new. Ffs, even Gillespie smacked the same bowlers around the park last season. Didn't think I'd miss Southee's lower order batting when I heard he was injured...
The few good NZ sides I've seen have never had 3-4 players averaging over 40, but they have had bloody useful lower order players. Once upon a time our 7-10 would have been Hadlee, Smith Bracewell and Cairns or Snedden. And then Cairns, Parore, Nash, Vettori. This side takes me back to 1993 or something when 8-11 were Su'a, Morrison, Doull (before he became a reasonable tail-end hitter), Watson / de Gron.... |

"Brendon McCullum: "Very tough Test matches, we were well short of the mark against the no. 1 side. We were really exposed. It is hard to point finger at anything at the moment, but we were outplayed in all departments by SA. We wanted to come here and compete, we showed glimpses at time. We had high hopes, maybe to win a sneak a win or two. Unfortunately we were exposed. The guys in the team fronted up well against SA, can't fault their attitude. ODI cricket is to a little to our liking as per our cricketing abilities. Hopefully we will be able to play well."

tbf to McCullum there's not a lot he can say other than that. As hard as it sounds, as a cricket team you've got to think positively (but still critically obviously) after such a defeat. Moping around pointing out that we suck serious **** acheives nothing, because they already know that.
