What does Cook have to do?

Virat Kohli (c)
For all his runs he still averages just over 50 (after this knock). So much water to go under the bridge just yet.

He's given himself every opportunity to be an all-time great. But longevity is a lot harder than people realise (think of what people were saying about Hussey a few years back).

Maybe we should create a separate category of batsmen falling in the dour, stonewalling class and then see where he falls within that.

You could make the argument that Prior is closer to All Time England honours than Cook

Knott yes, Ames probably but not many others ahead of Prior. Jack Russell and Bob Taylor were better glovemen but the extra runs Prior gets give him the edge over them and he is still improving as a keeper and is a good one now anyway.

Nah, Stewart should never be in contention for an AT England team, simply not good enough with bat and gloves.

Hah, great post. Even if not actually true, it is definitely arguable. I mean Cooks competition is significantly steeper than Prior's

Agree entirely, though he'd be one of the first on the teamsheet for an All Time England Decent Blokes XI
Plus Stewart had an under-rated stint as captain imo. I'm still grateful for him kick-starting the Hussain era into life with that win over WI at Lord's in 2000.

Prior has actually been quite good with the gloves of late, if he can maintain his average and continue to deliver clutch performances he has a pretty good shot.

Prior has been almost flawless standing back for a few years, just a couple of recent drops aside. He isn't outstanding standing up to the spinners, but he's been pretty good so far this series. Reckon he's one of the best with the gloves in world cricket at the moment.

Team balance comes into it too; if England want to pick Botham than picking Prior rather than Knott definitely has its benefits.

Who bats 6 and who bats 7? Because Botham should probably be in the team.
Probably Botham 6 and Prior 7 to have them in familiar roles. Prior just lends more reliability to a lower-middle order that wouldn't really measure up to ones containing Sobers or Gilchrist if it had both of Botham and Knott.
