Good start for Canterbury in their match against Wellington.

McCullum opened & got them off to a flyer with 76 off just 104 balls...and then Papps the forgotten up & coming opener scored 119.
Gary Stead is also batting well on 94*.

Auckland v Pakistan will be a great match...Pakistan are going to play their full strength lineup & Auckland will field players like McIntosh & Nicol.

Yes I was at the Basin today. What I saw was only just worth braving the wind and mist for, with Wellington bowling and catching poorly to let two compact, no-frills batsman dominate the afternoon.

McCullum seemed convinced a good innings could still influence his test prospects, mixing a gorgeous straight-drive with some streaky cross-bat shots. He gave a diving left-hand chance on the third man rope, but after Penn caught him in the groin twice (the 2nd a rather nasty-looking hook that he chopped into his cods, keeping him down for a couple of minutes), he played a rash shot and had his middle stump removed.

Fleming then claimed a sharp low-down catch to dismiss Fulton, but grassed 2 others to add to the 5 Wellington failed to pouch in the 4 hours I was there. He put in what only looked like token chases to anything that went past the cordon, but they don't call him 'Donk' for no reason!

Then Stead and Papps came together and sucked the life out of the medium-pacers and the innocuous off-spin from Patel. Stead came out and used the wind to his advantage in lofting over the top, then gladly milked them as the field spread. Papps has a straight, set-hinged backlift and shuffles across his stumps as the bowler hits the crease, similar to a Matthew Bell or Andrew Jones. He wasn't what I'd call stylish, but it was good to see a young Canterbury prude succeed against an attack still expecting pitch assistance and slutty batsmanship. "Mummy, don't these trundlers realise I've been on flat wickets down at the Academy since October?" and so on.

Cheers,
Kent.

lol nice summary there Kent.

Sounds like the typical Wellington effort when it comes to sport.

What the...did I read correctly today that Chris Nevin scored 148 for Wellington against Canterbury?

Damnit...just when I thought we'd seen the last of him, he comes up with a big century.

Some good totals down at the Basin too which is a good sign.

Don't worry Tim, we will never see Nevin again!

Not unless McCullum, Hart, Papps all ARE INJURED!

And I forgot to list the batsmen that will have to be injured for him to come into the side as a specialist batsman...

Peter Fulton is starting to play very well..2nd consecutive century for the season, ending 114 unbeaten off 173 balls.

Some good scores being made after that poor 1st round.

Tim or other Kiwis - Can you please tell me how I can get to the scorecards on the NZ cricket site? It seems like the links are obscured, at my end at least. I'm on holiday with poor Radiosport coverage, and I'd like to check the full boards once a day or so.

Thanks.

on the right hand side they have the scorecards..but only for live matches.

For some reason they don't have an archive of previous scorecards, just yet.

Thanks for the help Tim - I can get to the Auckland v. Wellington game, but I can still see links to the other 2 before the 'season schedule' banner covers them up, which is annoying. Perhaps they're not doing scorecards for them anyway.

Cheers.

What is that link again where I can find regular hourly updates on the State Championship?

Craig - I think The Mingster suggested newstalk.co.nz

I'm not too sure about this though. Sometimes their sports bulletins are limited to 3 or 4 stories, and the SC doesn't always make the cut.
