Is this Andre Ellis a decent player? If he can combine the bowling of Andre Adams with the batting of Andy Ellis I think he could be a bolter for the starting eleven.

Btw  at Jesse's shot to get out in the Mitch M vid. He deadset cbf with domestic bowlers if the deck is flat.

Yeah go Gillespie Cribb. I really wanted to hedge my vote between Milne and him, in reality I'd wait three more weeks.

I see Munro's 269* has now made the vault. Please tell me there isn't strong demand for this ****.

None of you want to drop Guptill?
I really want to, but unless we open with a middle order batsman (which is my idea) or a 20 year old there isn't anyone to drop him for.

McIntosh
Vincent
Yovich
Wilson
How
Raval
Papps
Brodie
Worker
Fulton
Rutherford
Redmond

That's the list of who opened in the last round. Six of them have already failed testz.

Wasn't Papp's first test series in South Africa and he got destroyed?

No way I'd want to be taking a green opener over there. Guptill stays, as bad as he is at the moment.

I kinda like the idea of Vincent actually. He's experienced and old enough that it wouldn't matter if he failed and lost confidence. If he succeeds it's a bonus, if he fails well so would've Guptill at this stage. We wouldn't be losing much in the fielding department that way.

I'm going to wait until January before finalising my wanted team. We still have a few FC games to get a look at Vettori's form, see if Cachopa continues his run, if Milne backs up the other day and if Gillespie finds murder mode. Jeets, Astle and Vettori face off will be good as well.
Not often NZC brackets two players in a squad announcement tbh. Vettori now won't be seen until a Friday night game on Dec 14 and a FC in Wgtn the following week, so Tastle's looking pretty good to tour.

Daemon got in with a subtle '**** Franklin' burn btw.

Then come the backup seamers...surely Arnel, Wagner and Milne are the front-runners here? And if you're looking for experience, Martin is a must.

.
Hang on a minute let me consult the thesaurus for the right adjective for Arnel.

This is what thesaurus.com returns for abomination

anathema, aversion, bother, curse, detestation, evil, horror, nuisance, plague, shame, torment

Take your pick.

Arnel on a serious note is very very good at FC level but relies on hitting the seam to get it to nibble both ways which on flat decks in tests it doesn't.

I'd be interested to know what concretely separates blokes like Philander and McGrath from Arnel. Modest pace, immaculate seam position, tight line and length, what's he missing?

Some things are not ok to even joke about and those include sending Vincent or Fulton to South Africa as a new opener. No thanks. Guppy. Keep the faith.

Still not sure who I like as backup bowlers for South Africa, beyond the must-haves of Southee, Boult, Bracewell, Patel, Vettori. Would probably take Wagner as one. And one of Gillespie, Milne or Martin depending on who is bowling well and if Bond thinks it's not too early for Milne. Wouldn't take Astle, even though he is not necessarily terrible - just needs more work.

And I think I'm done with Franklin in tests - bowling may have improved slightly but I just can't see him scoring runs when it matters against good opposition. So another question is whether to send a replacement allrounder (in addition to Vettori) - pretty tempted to get Carl Cachopa involved even if he doesn't get a game.

Also, put Munro in the ODI/T20 squad - our limited over side is pretty bad so might as well use it to blood some players of the right style who hold promise.

I know I said I'd sit on it but since the thread is here I'll predict who the selectors will take and pin my own colours to the mast and see if those I pick prove me right if they play. It's even going to have pretentious bolding of player names. We'll know who gets picked this week anyway. 15 man squad yeah? That means we're looking at a playing eleven of:

Guptill
McCullum
Williamson
Taylor
Flynn
...
Wicketkeeper
Vettori
Bracewell
Southee
Boult

That's roughly a lock. We may just go with the keeper at six and Vettori seven, making room for another bowler.

But assuming we pick a batsman for number six, we'll have two reserve spots for bowlers and two reserve spots for batsmen. If someone gets their arm broken by Steyn we will need that batting depth.

Port Elizabeth by all reports is low and slow so Jeets will tour, and with his record against South Africa Marto won't be left at home. If we take one less batsman then the selectors will want some left arm pace on the bench and the number two left armer in their eyes is Neil Wagner.

I'm going to back them picking Brownlie for number six, assuming Jesse is still happy smokin' domestix and isn't ready for tests. For their two reserve batsmen I bet they'll want at least one who can bowl. IMO we can safely say Franklin is gone for good as a batting allrounder. Wells isn't bowling atm, Anderson isn't taking many wickets, Ellis appears to be a ODI specialist, CdG couldn't handle the pace earlier in the year and Neesham is a bit raw, so I think we're looking at Cachopa or Munro. Despite Cachopa's ridiculous run of hundreds, one look at Dean Elgar today tells you everything you need to know about how ready Cachopa is for Steyn, Philander and Morkel. Munro might lack technique on the front foot through the offside and be fortunate to play all his home games on a road, but his legside play is superb and he has a hook shot to die for. I think it will be him.

The other reserve batsman is hard to pick because Broom has scored bugger all in the last couple of years most of the very few guys scoring runs have already been tried and failed, so I'll put $10 on the selectors trying to be cute (again) and picking Nicol (again). Maybe they will pick Fulton at a stretch, but I doubt it. So the squad I predict is:

Guptill
McCullum
Williamson (5/6)
Taylor (c)
Flynn
Brownlie (5/6)
Watling (wk)
Vettori (4)
Bracewell (3)
Southee (1)
Boult (2)

Munro
Nicol
Martin
Patel

If we take one less batsman add Wagner

As for my own picks, with my selectors hat on the next few days are crucial. If they're so damn determined to name the squad this week then Gillespie and Marto are in a straight shoot out in the current FC round and if either can blitz two reasonable batting line ups, they go. Failing that, if Bond gives the go ahead, pick Milne. If I had to pick just one, then I'm going to back Gillespie. This will be the week he gets angry and sends it down at 145kph trying to kill Fulton, Brownlie, Ellis and Latham. You heard it here first.

Jeets is my second spinner, and that is a pretty easy call. Astle needs more work. For my left armer I want Ben Wheeler.

Brownlie will be in the reserves for me since I'd put Vettori the batting allrounder at seven and go in with four strike bowlers and one stock bowler. I don't know who I want as my other reserve batsman since I don't think Cachopa, Latham or Rutherford are ready so I'll revert to my default PICK SINCLAIR!!!111 mode.

Guptill
McCullum
Williamson (6)
Taylor (c)
Flynn
Watling (wk)
Vettori (5)
Bracewell (3)
Southee (1)
Gillespie (4)
Boult (2)

Jeets
Wheeler
Brownlie
Sinclair

Can they win? If we outbowl the best attack in the world bowling to a vastly superior batting line up to our own then yes. Will it happen? Nope. Our attack is gun but no matter who we pick we're only going to get to 250 if someone tons up and anything beyond will require two or more tons and that isn't happening. Scoring 400 on a road against a lone ranger doesn't fill me with confidence they can do it against SA in SA, it just makes me wonder where the **** that effort has been at Napier all these years (barring that test against India of course). In fact if we pass 400 in any innings with the bat I'll make James Marshall my avatar for the number of days the highest scorer makes (so Taylor 114 means I have the avatar for 114 days). We simply don't have the batting to win or draw against this attack.

I'm going to really go out on a limb and predict a South African clean sweep in the test series.

Starting XI:
  1. Martin Guptill
  2. Brendon McCullum
  3. Kane Williamson
  4. Ross Taylor
  5. Daniel Flynn
  6. -
  7. BJ Watling +
  8. Daniel Vettori
  9. Doug Bracewell
  10. Tim Southee
  11. Trent Boult

Todd Astle
Neil Wagner/Mark Gillespie
Carl Cachopa
Colin Munro
Chris Martin
(Derek de Boorder)

So that's 10 of the 11 set, in my mind. Selectors to get pissed off with Kruger and drop him from the squad entirely. Cachopa or Munro to debut in the number 6 slot (Brownlie sucks, cbf with Franklin), or bump Watling and Vettori up a place to bring in an added bowler. I would potentially carry Derek de Boorder as an extra wicketkeeper, in case Guptill is so shot that they need Watling to open.

Cachopa has form behind him, and Munro has a double ton therefore must be selected. Martin in for his experience and Wagner gets the not over a young gun for his perceived experience in the conditions. Plus I'd rather have NZ blood Milne, Wheeler, Small or whoever else. Finally, Astle tours ahead of Jeets in my book - odds are he won't get a game anyway and IMO he has a higher ceiling than Patel. The experience of touring should help him. If Vettori tears something (again), you bring Jeets across and play 4 seamers.

I've chucked Gillespie as a possible replacement for Wagner in the event he tears Canterbury a new arsehole.

Rob Nicol can GAGF.

Wellington won't be playing again before this squad is named, and Canterbury are playing in Hamilton right now.

+1

I mean we're due to **** him around in the batting order for 1 or 2 chances and drop him like usual, right?

I think that both Wagner and Martin not playing this round in the shield is pretty telling. They will tour and fair enough.

Unless flights/logistics meant it wasn't possible.
