The Inaugural CW "Worst Dismissal Ever" Competition

Impressive that Ian Bell managed to get out in a Test between Australia and Pakistan.

I remember watching that live.

What I don't remember is, did the Lankans chuck up a stink and ask for Murali to be let back in like England did with Ian Bell at Trent Bridge vs. India?

Think he left after a bit of confusion, but there was a fair bit of **** afterwards. The ball hadn't even reached the fielder when he left the crease iirc.

One strange dismissal I've seen was in Christchurch in 2006, Sri Lanka v NZ.
Muralitharan, while pushing hard for a second run, inexplicably, decides to congratulate Sangakkara on his hundred, rather than completing the run.

Muttiah Muralitharan's amazing run out @ Christchurch v.s NZ - YouTube

McCullum did the same to Chris Mpofu in Zimbabwe a year previously and by doing so denied Shane Bond either a 5 or 10 wicket bag. NZ only won by a few hundred runs as I recall.

I don't think they did at the time, but there was certainly a lot of controversy afterwards.

Personally, I think there was fault on both sides.
Murali wandering off down the pitch while the ball was still in the process of being fielded was crazy and asking for trouble.
Taking the bails off and appealing for a run out when the batsman was obviously not trying to complete a run was not in the spirit of cricket.

Doesn't really justify inclusion given it's Afridi but the fact he plays no shot at all is hilarious to me.

England v Pakistan, 3rd Test, Karachi, December 2000 - YouTube

Giles bowling Around the wicket from wide of the crease pitchs a good length ball pitching middle and leg

Don't know if Afridi thought he was going to turn a mile and miss off, or not turn at all and miss leg.

1st Test: New Zealand v Pakistan at Dunedin, Nov 24-28, 2009 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Peter Fulton in this match

31.5*there was an inside edge and Fulton walks almost the full distance back to the pavilion and thinks of challenging it, too late I'm afraid, this is weird. Gul pitches it on middle and off and the ball skids through and hits him low on the pads, Doctrove raises the finger, Hot Spot showed a thin inside edge and Fulton always seemed in two minds as to what to do. Pakistan are lucky to get this wicket. Why didn't he go upstairs? Search me...*91/4

Right. So I've padded it out a bit using Rob's video to 48, which is a nice even number to get us going. There'll be 12 battles of 4, 2 per day.

Pick the two "best" dismissals from each. Top two go through. Closes in 24 hours.

---

Battle 1

Fine variety on offer first up - a vague wander down the pitch, a reverse sweep, a comedy slower ball and a full bunger.

Chris Lewis, Aus vs Eng, 2nd Test 1993 @ Lord's, 2nd innings. Decided to go for a walk down at Tim May, then had another walk back to the pavilion when stumped by a mile.

Ashwell Prince, SL vs SA, 2nd Test 2011 @ Durban, 1st innings. Given SA were 6/117, not the best time to pull out the reverse sweep to Herath.

Chris Read, Eng vs NZ, 2nd Test 1999 @ Lord's, 1st innings. Possibly the funniest slower ball dismissal in history.

Graham Gooch, Aus vs Eng, 2nd Test 1994 @ MCG, 1st innings. Never a good look to get out first ball of the day, even worse when you've spooned a full toss back to the bowler.

---

Battle 2

More unusual fare here, with "use your bat (properly)" being a common theme, and one favourite to go a long, long way.

Michael Clarke, Aus vs Pak, 3rd Test 2010 @ Hobart, 1st innings. To this day I still am at a loss to come up with an explanation for Clarke letting a harmless, gentle leggie bowl him from outside leg, save for that he must've fallen asleep.

Adam Hollioake, Aus vs Eng, 6th Test 1997 @ The Oval, 1st innings. I know it's Shane Warne but generally speaking, if it pitches middle you should use your bat.

Brad Haddin, Aus vs SA, 1st Test 2011 @ Cape Town, 2nd innings. Yes, it's that innings and that shot.

Inzamam ul-Haq, Eng vs Pak, 3rd Test 2006 @ Headingley, 1st innings. Even when knocking over his own stumps with his belly Inzamam does it with some grace, only just clipping the bails as he vaults over.
