We have plodders and sloggers, exactly. So with that mix, isn't plodding at the start mixed with slogging at the end the best fit? I'd suggest it is, given we made 250. I don't see the point of calculated gambles when we didn't take any and made that score, which could well have been a winning one. I don't think our total represented 'surrendering meekly'.

But hey don't worry, with the benefit of experience we'll get better.
NZ made 250 and lost comfortably, so I don't see the point there. It wasn't as though NZ completely cocked it up with the ball or Sri Lanka batted outstandingly well.

NZ have a slogger opening the batting, scoring slowly. Meanwhile one of their better 'proper batsman' floats around at 6-7 or whatever. But NZ need to be more dynamic than just batting in a routine fashion, they need a bit of creativity to try and muster extra runs somewhere.

omg, we've got a game back on.

And we immediately lose a wicket. Great going, guys. Oh, and they've sent Jacob ****ing Oram in. It's like we're actually trying to lose.

That is pretty hilarious. All the Kiwis on here have been saying he's shot as far as batting is concerned - but he keeps getting a go.

New Zealand pick Williamson in the T20 - so the way he's been treated in ODIs with more overs to go and tighter fielding restrictions (making it easier to hit orthodox cricketing boundaries) makes no sense.

Since I'm utterly bored out of my mind here at work (*checks over shoulder to see if anyone's watching*), I've had a quick look into just how terrible Oram has been in the last few years. A quick summary:

    Code:
M I NO Runs HS Ave SR
    season 2008/09 11 7 1 168 75* 28.00 86.59
    season 2009 2 2 0 28 24 14.00 58.33
    season 2009/10 7 5 1 139 83 34.75 120.86
    season 2010 2 1 0 14 14 14.00 140.00
    season 2010/11 10 6 1 86 25 17.20 111.68
    season 2011/12 4 3 1 88 59 44.00 166.03
    season 2012 4 4 0 55 32 13.75 69.62
    season 2012/13 1 1 0 2 2 2.00 50.00
    For a total of 443 runs @ 19.3.

So, he's had one okay season, in 09/10, and in 11/12 he averaged 44 but only batted three times, for scores of 4*, 59 and 25, all against Zimbabwe. How on Earth does he keep getting put up the order?

Actually, now I think about it, his ODI batting has always been terrible, bar a year or two about five years ago. Going year by year since his debut gives this:

    Code:
M I NO Runs HS Ave SR
    year 2001 17 16 1 229 59 15.26 81.49
    year 2002 10 10 2 138 46* 17.25 71.50
    year 2003 22 14 1 239 81 18.38 68.48
    year 2004 21 13 2 221 54 20.09 82.46
    year 2005 12 9 0 207 42 23.00 71.62
    year 2006 5 4 0 87 43 21.75 69.60
    year 2007 23 16 5 549 101* 49.90 98.21
    year 2008 13 8 1 319 88 45.57 98.76
    year 2009 12 9 1 105 33* 13.12 70.46
    year 2010 6 3 0 109 83 36.33 178.68
    year 2011 12 7 2 90 25 18.00 115.38
    year 2012 7 7 0 141 59 20.14 104.44
He's more or less always averaged 20ish, barring those two years highlighted. Makes for terrible reading, but I suppose he'll keep getting picked as a batsman because he's left handed or something.

Well, I'm not a fan of Watling opening the batting, but that's a superb innings. Deserved a hundred.

Am picking the rain to intervene if it looks like NZ's going to win.

That was a good knock by Watling, some really good placement through the gaps

    NZ doing well, so far.

So, is Watling's success with the bat on this tour the final nail in the coffin of McCullum's wicket keeping career?

If they're not going to bat Williamson in the top 5 then there's no point in playing him.

Looks like this partnership has sealed the win for SL. Top batting.

It rained and Duckworth Lewis completely changed the complexity of the game. I'm sure you can fathom that.

BJ needs to be in all three forms, serious player. Actually I mean two forms, he's not a T20 option

Ugh, NZ bats nearly half their overs thinking it's a 50 over match, and only get 9 extra runs through dwl? And isn't the whole dwl method pretty much worthless now that they've radically revised the fielding rules anyway?

Anyway, sounds like a weak bowling effort from our lot and superb batting from Dilshan.

Proudly against the bring back Bennett movement since he is injury prone and won't last 5 days.

New Zealand have a 18% winning percentage against proper countries with Nathan McCullum in the team. Is there a more useless cricketer going around playing in a top eight team?

Yes. We have one in our own team, his name is Jacob Oram.

But seriously, blaming losses on the continued selection of a single player is just stupid. Especially seeing as McCullum is not picked or expected to perform as a player who wins games single-handedly.

He's not being picked as a batsman. He's the 13th ranked ODI bowler in the world and has taken 31 wicket @ 23 in the last couple of years. Fair enough, he's at the end of his career, has declined a bit, and isn't far away from retiring, but have you looked at the statistics of the other bowlers in the team?

Bangladesh's ODI rating is only one point behind us now.
