re guptil - I just worry that we might hurt his confidence if he keeps failing and keeps getting picked.

Hypothetically if Dilshan has to bat lower down who opens with Pirana? My first thought was Mathews but then he's been SLs best batsman against the moving ball in this series and it might be best to have him lower as insurance since SL have collapsed twice.

He'll do well to sort out that technical flaw with his front-pad before he does anything else.

Hah. Now this is funny.

Boult to Mathews, OUT, Caught at second slip! It was a length ball going across Angelo, who tried to hit it hard towards the leg side and got an outside edge that flew fast towards Guptill, who took a reflex catch in front of his face

All this talk of declaring - we had just better bat - and take it a bit easier now we have lost 2 wickets.

Gutted. Stumped attempting a defensive shot? Did cricinfo get that right? Huge blow in terms of slowing the momentum for the Lankans.

Scenarios I'd be comfortable declaring on:

350-run lead at tea today.
300-run lead overnight.
250-run lead at lunch tomorrow.

Anything else and no. However we currently lead by 226 so I think a 350-run lead by tea or shortly after might be a realistic target and we could consider giving ourselves all day to bowl them out.

Guptill is the best opening option we have right now. Just start hoping that either some other opener really stands up in the Plunket Shield or that he gets better, a quick fix isn't the way to address this issue.
Yes that's right. All other options have been tried and have all failed.
