It is all about priorities, winning a World Cup is the pinnacle of the sport having achieved that it is very hard to be motivated short term because you have achieved the biggest prize in the sport of your profession so any other Cricket right after would almost seem insignificant after the magnitude of winning the World Cup.

Given that England have never won a World Cup or reached a final since 1992 this is not a problem that England have had to deal with although having said that after winning the Ashes in 2005 which is essentially a bi lateral series the team were all awarded honours by the queen including Paul Collingwood who scored a grand total of 17 runs in the series.

Despite all that euphoria at winning a bilateral series England were promptly hammered 2-0 in Pakistan just a few months later.

So when India become number 1 in the world and then get hammered, it doesn't matter because they'd reached the pinnacle of the game? But when England become number 1 in the world and then get hammered, it should require a post mortem enquiry?

Bois I'm pretty sure it's Jono airing his legitimate opinions on the game of cricket. Just doesn't have the balls to say it under his normal username.

No. They were busy downplaying the losses so that they could talk up the next IPL.

As I said earlier, if you win the biggest prize in any sport it is only natural that the events that follow in the near future will have the feeling of “after the lord mayors show” the great West Indies team of the 1970’s and 1980’s won the World Cup in 1975 and 1979, yet in 1975 after winning the tournament, they got tonked 5-1 in a test series in Australia.
At the end of the day, people today remember and talk about the West Indies winning the World Cup in 75 and 79 not a bilateral series that they lost having just won the biggest tournament in Cricket.

The World Cup is certainly the biggest prize in ODI cricket, though I (and many others) still consider Test success to mean a lot more.

However, even allowing for that the comparison with 1975 isn't really valid - the World Cup (and limited overs cricket generally) wasn't nearly as big back then as it is today and historically the Test series' which followed - not only in Australia in 75/76 but also India's visit to WI and the WI tour of England in '76 - were far more significant both in determining cricket's world order of the time, and in the building of the all-conquering West Indian empire.

The world cup's not the biggest thing in cricket though.

The Australia side was a better team that's why they got tonked it had nothing to do wit ha lack of effort by the Windies which is the opposite with India last year where quite simply aside from one or two players they didn't make the effort.

It should because any person who works for the ECB through to the players, has said that test cricket is the format they take most seriously and treasure. As such, surrendering the no1 ranking so meekly is a big deal, although it was mainly based on bashing at home.

In India's case, we reached no1, were consistent beforehand and for nearly 2 years after being no1, this despite our emphasis on ODI cricket and the world cup which is regarded as the biggest event by the BCCI. So when we lost the ranking, rightly/wrongly the BCCI didn't investigate much because they knew the problem was burn out and motivation.

There is no other way to explain how sucha great batting line up which has performed everywhere failed so badly. There was some disagreement within the camp too. The BCCI has internally solved the problem.

ECB has chosen to ignore theirs and they keep churning out the outdated message to play in an orthodox fashion.

I like how you are playing along and have a good sense of humour. Unfortunately that statement is probably very true.

and rightly so! The IPL is one of the premier tournaments in our sport players around the world dream of securing an IPL contract. England's star player Kevin Pietersen has said he primarily wants to play Test Cricket to increase his brand and his value for the IPL he has also said that he prefers the atmosphere playing for the Delhi Daredevils to when he is playing for England.

The BCCI have every right to be proud of a tournament that is so prestigious and that so many crave to be a part of but in reality only an elite few are chosen for!

KP himself has gone on record as saying he wished more English players were picked for IPL as he feels it would have helped them immensely.

First of all, it's hardly cut in stone that he is England's best players. Secondly, he didn't say he preferred the atmosphere playing for Delhi, he said the South African crowds were less hostile to him when he was playing for Delhi
