Honestly want Pujara to open instead. He'll be gun with those fields in the powerplay overs.

I'd prefer a completely different team for T20Is, from the Test side. Let's keep the Test players focussed on the five-day effort. The T20I side should be composed exclusively of non-Test players, such as Raina, Rohit Sharma, Kedar Jadhav, young Aditya Waghmode and Ian Chappell's favourite, Unmukt Chand. Then again, we'd prefer to have some older players in the T20I side, so that younger players don't get stuck in T20 mode and miss out on FC performances.

I don't see any reason for a Pujara/Sharma combo to not work out in ODIs at all, tbh. But we have to manage Pujara's workload given his dodgy knee.. Also, there is a nice progressive line if we have our openers lined up something like this in our first choice XIs as of today..

    Tests:

    Vijay
    Dhawan

    ODIs:

    Dhawan
    Rohit

    T20s:

    Rohit
    Rahane

At the top, I'd prefer to have the top two of Vijay, Rahane and Dhawan for Tests as well as ODIs, and the pair of Aditya Waghmode and Mayank Agarwal for T20Is. Vijay would be an ideal T20I specialist, though.

ADD-ON: Siddarth Kaul is one to watch for the next season. Hopefully he'll keep up the good form next time too, unlike several debut season wonders (ahem, Dhawal, ahem, Mithun) who struggled in their next dig. Likewise Ishwar Pandey.

Hope Pujara is left out because selectors doesnt want to select him until or unless they have reports about his knee.

Apparently they want to send him as Captain with India A to South Africa. Dhoni seems reluctant to use him in ODI's for some reason.

At least he's doing something. Such overwhelming evidence that defensive Test batsman can make the transfer to ODI cricket though, look at Dravid, Trott and Amla. More than anything else, I don't like the school of thought that keeps him out of the ODI side, it is flawed.

IF that is indeed the reason, then its lame.. But I think it has more to do about managing his workload and his knees.. ODIs are a bit more action packed than tests and you don't want him doing his knee again this soon...

He must be injured. He's opted out of the IPL because of it. He'd be a fantastic fit in ODIs, but for his fitness. This just opens up a place for Raina and Rohit Sharma, again.

Kedar Jadhav is an interesting selection. He's played 40 FCs and 36 ODs, but his OD stats are delicious - average of 52, strike rate of 108, 4x100 and 10x50 in 36 innings. But we know where the OD games are often played, and the bowlers who figure in them. Still, two A-team tours should get him ready. The competition for berths in the limited-overs team is very tough for specialist batsmen, but he should be a starting lineup player in T20Is.

Unmukt Chand, Ishwar Pandey, Sid Kaul, Shami Ahmed and Parvez Rassool are barely a season or two old, and rushing them in is as good as jumping the gun. Four more seasons for them. Dhawan, Bhuv Kumar and Amit Mishra are products of the system, and should figure in the squad.

One position with little to no competition is that for the all-rounders spots. There seems one lone contender in Jadeja, who clearly is a step down from the discarded (Irfan, Yusuf) and ignored (Laxmi Shukla) lot. Not so much Yuvraj Singh, a far better batsman and equally competent bowler. Or Ashwin and Bhuv Kumar, capable batsmen to follow a very strong top six. The batting is strong, but taking ten wickets is a priority. Pick the top five bowlers. Guess what, at least two can bat.

Vinay Kumar, Bhuv Kumar and Umesh Yadav will form a competent seam-up attack, with a capable reserve in Irfan/Praveen.

How are the Indian domestic performers doing in the IPL? Let's see. We won't, however, see Mehul Patel or Aditya Waghmode play for an IPL side because nobody has signed them on!

Dinesh Karthik is carrying his Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy form into the IPL with good effect. Manprit Juneja, though, has struggled, but is getting better. One bloke who's been great in the domestic T20 but poor in the IPL is Unmukt Chand, though he's got out to very good balls or a great catch.

The strange case of Rishi Dhawan- a full-fledged all-rounder for Himachal, who neither bats nor bowls for Mumbai- surely, this bloke deserves more? He won't get much playing in this team.

Amit Mishra continues to impress here. He's been doing well in Hazare/Deodhar/SMAT, and takes it forward here. Surely a step into the national team?

Kedar Jadhav has been really good for Maharashtra and West Zone in limited-overs games but the team owners of Delhi, with whom he has signed up, don't give him a fair chance, often choosing Andre Russell or Jeevan Mendis or a back-from-layoff Irfan Pathan over him.

Mayank Agarwal was second in the runs tally in the SMAT, but struggled down the order, and somehow came into his own at the top. He has a very impressive T20 record, and should be called up for T20 matches, but is the trend of T20 specialists really a good thing? We wonder.

Gurkeerat Singh is one of Punjab's best T20 players, but didn't get a bat for Kings- not surprising, when they were chasing a paltry total of 100 and didn't lose too many wickets. Hopefully he'll get plenty of games this season.

Poor, poor Siddarth Kaul, can't even get a game at Nehra's expense for Delhi, despite being the second-highest wicket-taker in SMAT, and also leading the wickets chart for Ranji. Maybe the GMR bosses spend more time watching overseas T20 leagues than domestic cricket events? Likewise Ishwar Pandey, not getting a game for the poorly performing Pune team. Delhi have lost three straight games, while Pune have looked terrible in their first two. Surely an incentive to get these two in their respective playing XIs?
