I'm not sure you can compare-

Procter (bowling AR)
G. Pollock (LH middle order bat)
Barry Richards (RH opening bat)
Donald (RH opening bowler)
Pollock (bowling AR)
&
Kallis (batting AR)
Course you can. Isn't Bradman the greatest Australian cricketer?

Requires a fair bit of conjecture but so do all these comparisons.

Indeed. All players bring something slightly different to the table. I've never really got the idea that you can't compare two different types of players; if anything the opposite is true and it'd be impossible to compare two players who were exactly the same...

You can rank players based on their importance to their teams, impact on the game, performance in their eras etc etc.

To just go...

player d>>>>player e = player a>>>player b>>>player c

doesn't make a heap of sense to me.

Damn, seems like my World XI changes every week. Anyways

1. Hobbs
2. Sutcliffe
3. Bradman*
4. Pollock
5. Richards
6. Sobers
7. Gilchrist+
8. Procter
9. Marshall
10. Barnes
11. McGrath

Am trying different bowling combinations it seems, 1 through 7 are still the same, as are Marshall and McGrath. Since it seems Barnes was more an O'Reilly type of bowler, I'd rather have him than Warne/Murali. On Procter - from what I can tell, he was a better bowler than any of the great bowling all rounders, bar Hadlee, and very close to Imran, and was a better bat than all of them bar Miller.

Someone who knows so much about current cricketers as you being too new to the game to remember Shaun Pollock playing well makes me feel so, so old.

Yeah I can barely recall Gilchrist, McGrath, Warne in Tests. Have a few memories for when Dad subscribed to the channel to watch the WC but that's about it. It's all muddled until about '08.

I must be old. I can remember the Border era clearly. The first time I payed real attention to the details of cricket was during the 1989 Ashes, but I can remember thinking the WIs were so cool when they were thrashing us in the 80s.

I guess my general life pessimism stems from the fact I saw my cricket team (Aus) getting thrashed through the 80s, while the Tiges were getting slaughtered by everyone in the footy as well.
