The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Picking an ATG XI varies depending on the scenario chosen. So if we assume;

1. ATG XI vs 'parallel Universe' ATG XI
2. 7 Test series that must be won at all costs
3. Unknown random playing conditions ranging from uncovered pre-WW1 pitches to Headingly green tops and Delhi dust bowls. That is, all contingencies.

Then I would pick;

01. Jack Hobbs
02. Barry Richards
03. Don Bradman
04. Sachin Tendulkar
05. Garry Sobers
06. Keith Miller
07. Adam Gilchrist +
08. Richie Benaud*
09. Richard Hadlee
10. Wilfred Rhodes
11. Malcolm Marshall
How can you not have Barnes in a possible sticky wicket scenario?

Warner

Bradman
G.Chappell
Miller
Harvey

Warne
Lillee
O'Reilly

Surely Miller at 6 and Harvey at 5?

My list...

Hayden
Lawry - Plenty of dash in the rest of line up, need an accumulator (Warner might replace him in the next 5 years but Simpson could easily fit in as well)
Bradman
Ponting
Harvey
Miller
Gilchrist
Davidson ~Leftie for variety and strengthens the tail
Lindwall
Warne
McGrath

Can't leave out Donnelly
class player but he played less than 10 tests and ditched NZ for County Cricket (understandable).

The only players I include with minimal tests are Cowie and Bond, though tbh the number of kiwis with 50 or more tests is pretty bad and limited mainly to players from my lifetime.

Glenn Turner
Bert Sutcliffe
Adorable Future Test Captain Big Daddy Kane and His Gold Chain
Martin Crowe
Ross the Boss
John R. Reid
Brendon McCullum version 1 (wk)
Richard Hadlee
Bruce Taylor
Shane Bond
Jack Cowie

Reid takes the spin duties with Dan the Man coming in for Bruce Taylor if required, though come to think of it Bruce Taylor had a lot of his success on decks not suited to pace bowling.

Dempster and Donnelly sound like they were awesome but miss out.

Keith Miller
Don Bradman
Ricky Ponting
Greg Chappell
Allan Border (c)
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Alan Davidson
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillee
Glenn McGrath

Miller pinch hits and Bradman opens with him because it would be fun and allows the middle order I wanted.

Poms

Jack Hobbs
Graham Gooch
Wally Hammond
Kevin Pietersen
Joe Root
Ian Botham
Matt Prior (wk)
Andrew Flintoff
Harold Larwood
Fred Trueman
Jim Laker

I just want to see that English side play tbh. Much more interesting than picking England by the book.

The only thing you've changed in 3 years is Warner for Simpson and sticking with Warne over Lindwall.

Yeh, that's not too bad I reckon. I'd still consider Lindwall over either O'Reilly or Warne in some situations.
