The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Love seeing Garner make these XIs. One of my faces at the moment, and makes sense to me.

I like the idea of Lillee, Wasim and Garner as a trio at the moment.

Ashwell Prince at 5 for South Africa was not who I expected.

I didn't think Warne would make it either. Thought there would be someone else not opening the bowling to average under 25 with 100 wickets from Australia.
It's just that there are precious few South African batsman who have scored plenty of runs at 5 or 6. It seems to be an 'historical' weakness.

Quick question. Was Tony Greig England's best batsman of the 70s? Because all I hear about England vs Lillee-Thommo and Windies-Pace-attack is that he was the only one who handled them well during that time.
Certainly not. Whatever you think of Geoff Boycott missing for three tough years (which was coincidence and not due to any ill reasoned BS about him being afraid of the bowling) he was head and shoulders above the rest (metaphorically if not physically.)

I plugged the following criteria into Statguru and got the following batsman;

'1970s'
Tests = 20 or greater
Average = 45 or greater

Javed Miandad
1976 - 1979
Tests = 25
HS = 206
Average = 64.34

Viv Richards
1974 - 1980
Tests = 30
HS = 291
Average = 58.21

Geoff Boycott
1970 - 1979
Tests = 44
HS = 191
Average = 55.97

Sunil Gavaskar
1971 - 1979
Tests = 60
HS = 221
Average = 55.91

Greg Chappell
1970 - 1980
Tests = 54
HS = 247*
Average = 52.98

Ian Redpath
1970 - 1976
Tests = 33
HS = 171
Average = 50.19

Alvin Kallicharan
1972 - 1980
Tests = 53
HS = 187
Average = 49.45

Glenn Turner
1971 - 1977
Tests = 30
HS = 259
Average = 49.37

Dennis Amiss
1971 - 1977
Tests = 45
HS = 262
Average = 49.11

Gordon Greenidge
1974 - 1980
Tests = 21
HS = 134
Average = 46.81

Gundappa Viswanath
1971 - 1979
Tests = 62
HS = 179
Average = 46.11

Roy Fredericks
1971 - 1977
Tests = 49
HS = 169
Average = 45.89

Lawrence Rowe
1972 - 1980
Tests = 26
HS = 302
Average = 45.76

Clive Lloyd
1971 - 1980
Tests = 48
HS = 242*
Average = 45.72

So Geoff Boycott is the obvious choice as the best English batsman of the 1970s. He may even be THE batsman of the 1970s because he batted at both the beginning and end of the decade, and Miandad and Richards didn't.

However, Boycott did miss a couple of key years due to his self imposed exile. So I think that the true best batsman of the decade should go to either Gavaskar or Chappell, although WSC does confuse things somewhat.

I was surprised that Miandad was the only Pakistan batsman to make the cut-off, and pleasantly surprised that both Redpath and Viswanath have averages higher than Lloyd. If anyone wants to add Vishy to their ATG Indian team then I won't complain. After all, he did have style.

Yep, I get the same team.

Which just goes to show - you can't build an ATG XI on Statsguru and averages alone.

There needs to be other criteria like;

Context: Who they played, where they played, and when they played.
Peer Review: How do other contemporary professional cricketers rate them?
Expert Review: How do journalists and historians rate them?
Legacy: What sort of legacy do they leave behind?

Etc

Eyes not spreadsheets
While the teams are probably not the strongest they are 'solid' as you say, and do highlight the fact that we forget batsman like Graham Thorpe who was obviously a cracking middle-order batsman.
I don't forget how good a player was but that's more due to having watched him, not having looked at a list of averages.

With Kallis, Procter and Hadlee there's probably an all rounder overkill. Can replace Procter with Vijay Merchant may be.

The Tiger King
Not really, Kallis is a genuine batsman and Hadlee and Procter genuine bowlers. Nothing bits and pieces about their main suit. Not sure what Vijay Merchant brings to the table that these 3 don't
