Lefties XI (batsmen can bowl with their right and bowlers can bat with their right)

Graeme Smith*
Matthew Hayden
Kumar Sangakkara
Graeme Pollock
Brian Lara
Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist+
Wasim Akram
Alan Davidson
Bishan Bedi
Bill Johnston

Very strong batting of course, but I think the area where they lose out is spin bowling, i.e compared to a Murali/Warne, or any of the other top tier spinners (Barnes, O'Reilly, Grimmett, Laker). Perhaps Verity in for Bedi?
Underwood for Bedi (although they were very different bowlers, and i depends on your preference, I guess). Bruce Reid for Bill Johnston.

Also, replace Graeme Smith with either Arthur Morris or Neil Harvey, with Lara a number 3, and Sanga at 5.

So, it would be:

Hayden
Morris/ Harvey
Lara
Pollock
Sangakkara
Sobers
Gilly +
Wasim
Davidson
Reid
Underwood/ Bedi

Batting's handy, as you said! I am pretty sure Roy Frederiks, Bill Lawry, Bert Sutcliffe and Alister Cook should get one above Langer, and maybe Anwar too.

Gilmour ahead of Goddard/Woolley, and Wardle/Verity ahead of Shakib as well, maybe? Don't need too many all rounders now, do we?

one team for both ODIs and Tests (without altering batting positions)

hayden
sehwag
ponting
richards
lara
dhoni +
pollock
hadlee
akram
murali
mcgrath
Just seen this, I would flick Dhoni and make Gilchrist open in both formats, it's pretty much the same tactic as opening with Sehwag anyway. Then you can play Tendulkar or Chappell or someone and your batting doesn't spontaneously combust after getting past #5.

Gilly not good enough to open in tests for sure. And Sachin is less effective in ODIs if thrown in middle order.

If batting is your problem, drop McGrath and bring in imran. Imran, Dhoni, pollock, hadlee and akram is the best 6 to 10 you will ever get.

People probably would have said the same about Sehwag, had it never been tried. He started out as a lower order dasher too. And he never developed an opening batsman's technique, he just relied on his eye and co-ordination, which Gilly possessed in spades. I think Gilchrist could well have done a top job as an aggressive modern opener.

I'd much rather bat Gilchrist at six in both formats than make him open in both formats, especially given he's keeping wicket. So something like:

1. Greenidge
2. Smith
3. Richards
4. Tendulkar
5. Chappell
6. Gilchrist
7. Pollock
8. Imran
9. Hadlee
10. Wasim
11. Muralitharan

Not really happy with having to pick Wasim but having all of McGrath, Pollock and Hadlee in a team would be a bit samey, especially with Imran also there.

I know most CWers don't like tinkering with the batting order specialists, but from what I have observed watching cricket that it's better to pick the best bats regardless of where they will have to bat. For example, if I had to pick the best batting line-up from the last 20 years, then it would go like this

Dravid | Kallis | Lara | Tendulkar | Ponting | Waugh, Steve

I know most of you would pick Haydos, and Smith/Sehwag for as the openers, but I don't see the harm in just picking the best bats. The number 3 acts like an opener on so many occasions in his career anyways, so Dravid and Kallis are good to go, imo.

How about:

Graeme Smith
Alastair Cook
Younis Khan (for some reason some people find his batting stylish, its just fugly imo)
Javed Miandad
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Mike Procter
Jack Russell/ MS Dhoni
Ravi Shastri
Shabbir Ahmed
Mutthiah Muralitharan
Courtney Walsh

Could have picked plenty who were more ugly to watch, but wanted to pick a good team... more like an Ugly but Effective XI

Procter the batsman too good to be here, but yeah as a bowler. What about:

Sutcliffe | Smith | Barrington | Miandad | Chanders | Dhoni + | Mackay | Procter | Croft | Willis | Murali |

May be. But he never opened in tests. I would like to stick to actual data. Looks messy to make a keeper open in tests anyways. Don't want sachin in middle order in ODIs either.

Just pondering the

"Gun fielders/all rounder combo (ODI)"

Adam Gilchrist +
Mark Waugh
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Jonty Rhodes
Andrew Symonds
Paul Collingwood
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Richard Hadlee
Shane Warne

Waugh, Ponting, Viv, Jonty, Symonds and Collingwood would be brilliant in the field, and the fraction you might lose by picking slightly lesser batsmen (Collingwood, Jonty and Symonds) on the basis of their fielding would be offset by the fact the opposition would be forced to hit out because of the excellent groundfielding, and by having batting all the way to 11.

Nice team Love the bowling, and having Collingwood, Waugh, Symonds as bowling covers a good idea :) AB de Villiers for Jonty, though, I think
