Cricket Australia today announced the England Lions will head to Australia this summer to play a series of one-day matches against Australia A in late February and early March.

The Junction Oval, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sydney Cricket Ground and Hobart’s Blundstone Arena will share the hosting duties, giving cricket fans an early look at what the old enemy may throw up a few months later when Australia heads to the UK in their quest to regain the famous little urn.

The series will commence with the Victorians playing the Lions in three warm-up games, before a five-game series against the Australia A squad.

CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the series would provide players in both teams an opportunity to get a better look at each other, previewing what may lie ahead.

“In addition to a massive summer of international cricket, fans will also get an early look at what the English might throw up in the Ashes when their England Lions team tours here in February,” Mr Sutherland said.

“While the Australian team will be in India for four important Tests for the Border/Gavaskar Trophy, those on the cusp of national representation will be able to test their mettle against England’s next best and cricket fans get an early taste of that Ashes rivalry.”

After the series gets underway in Victoria in early February with three tour matches, the Australia A squad will then assemble as the series moves to Hobart with Blundstone Arena hosting three matches on 16, 18 and 22 February, before rounding out the tour at the SCG for the final two encounters on 25 February and 1 March.

Ashley Mallett : Ashley Mallett: What's the matter with South Australia? | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

pretty decent article, although i don't think mallett draws enoughattention to the players SA had contracted in previous seasons who were basically LO specialists (Borgas, Harris, O'Brien etc) and, in a promising sign, have been axed over the past couple of seasons, leading the way for more FC capable players a) getting contracted and b) standing a chance of getting a game. although i guess botha is kinda the king LO specialist...christan too i guess. they seem to have richardson marked down for that format too

Christian's been pretty good for them in First Class cricket. For the most part not in the roll he was expected to perform, but they've got good value from him as a bowling allrounder especially considering they play half their games in Adelaide. He even scored some runs last season!

Yeah, that's the problem. Was brought here to bat, not to bowl. Whether that was what he wanted or where he saw himself I dunno but taking 5 seasons to finally bear fruit would have been frustrating, especially since he's back in struggletown this year.

The article has a massive elephant in the room in grade cricket and Mallett merely glances at it. Pointing out that sacking Elizabeth was short-sighted (more like 15 years ago, Rowdy), it's true but he doesn't mention the clubs who should be merged now; do we really need East Torrens and Tea Tree Gully any more or West Torrens and Woodville? That Port Adelaide continues to exist as a grade club is damning enough. Pretty sure I remember Sounda Sleep pointing out SA country cricket is in such a woeful state he, in his 50's, was still scoring runs in the SA country carnival so dunno if that's the solution either. It's not a raw talent thing, the system is geared toward mediocrity. There's no incentive to achieve.

I'm in danger of being a broken record on this but until SA grade cricket is fixed, SA state cricket will struggle in the long form. The system isn't producing FC standard cricketers and SACA knows it so they don't give a **** about grade cricket and pick the other states' rejectamenta.

Therein lies the problem, though; Borgas and Harris weren't always LO specialists.

Yeah exactly. Harris in particular was a lock for years in the Shield side. O'Brien played a heck of a lot of shield for a bloke with his limitations too (to be fair, happened in both states he played for).

When you look at a bloke like Ferguson, it seems pretty obvious he's never learnt how to bat for a whole day. In NSW/VIC/QLD, you don't get a look in for the next level at all unless you've made some big grade hundreds and shown you can bat for the best part of a whole day's play. Obviously there has been the odd exception to this rule (eg. Clarke), but it seems to have held them in pretty good stead going in to FC cricket.
