New Zealand doom and gloom thread

I think they put it to the readers to submit their ideas. Always a great idea, like when they asked the viewers who the MOTM at Hobart was.

On another note the contracts must be coming very soon because the major associations have to do theirs at the end of this month.

Where's your money?

Rutherford
Fulton
Williamson
Taylor
Brownlie
McCullum, B.
Watling
Guptill
Latham
Ronchi
Franklin
Southee
Boult
Bracewell
Wagner
Vettori
Martin, B.
Mills
McClenaghan
McCullum, N.

Lock it in. I would pick a few different names but I think the above is what we will get.
There are three names touch & go here, Latham, B Martin & Ronchi,
I reckon one of their contacts will go to Corey Anderson, as the will be looking towards 2015 world cup

Anderson for Ronchi and that's the list, IMO.

Unless they replace Franko, in which case Anderson & Ronchi to get deals.

I've said this in the other thread, but there is no ****ing need for 4 wicketkeepers.

Pick 1 or 2 and have the others told to work exclusively on their batting.

Kippax's YouTube channel to cost Anderson a living.

You're bad and you should feel bad, Kippax.
Carlchopa's probably going to make the A squad in the next week tbf. If anyone is justified in contacting the channel demanding it calls off the dogs for livelihood reasons, it's him.

Anderson will clearly be one of the "new faces" they're talking about. I wonder if Milne might surprisingly come back in from the cold, there's bound to be some concern there his farcical injury run stems in part from semi-pro surroundings. The new CD coach is clearly a big fitness fanatic though.

Bartin's probably one of those 'amateur in spirit, not ideal for a school visit' types like Gillespie who typically don't get contracts.

Millmow: Contentious calls on NZ cricket list | Stuff.co.nz

The players have been told their fate and if the whispers are correct Tom Latham, Corey Anderson, Colin Munro, Grant Elliott and Martin got the contentious 16-20 slots.

On the outer appear to be Andrew Ellis, the Wellington trio of Luke Ronchi, Mark Gillespie and James Franklin and the perennially unlucky Ian Butler.

The fact that Elliott was the only Firebird to make the cut has massive implications for Cricket Wellington. It now has to squeeze Franklin and Ronchi into its contract list pushing the likes of Gillespie, Michael Papps and Jesse Ryder further down the pecking order and some young ones off the bottom.

It also makes solid first class players like Luke Woodcock and Stephen Murdoch susceptible to higher offers from rival provinces. Elliott should walk to the Kelburn Lotto shop this morning.

He is fortuitous. He is 34, got injured at the Champions Trophy and in the past 12 months played two T20s for 19 runs at 9.50 and seven ODIs for 199 runs at 28.42.

Here is the anomaly. Had Elliott been overlooked for a national contract he would've sat behind James Franklin, Luke Ronchi, Mark Gillespie at the Firebirds.

What's the answer? Fifteen contracts.

That way you find room for test regulars Doug Bracewell, Neil Wagner, Doug Brownlie and Peter Fulton but not the subjective selections that landed contracts for the 16-20 lads.

If you look back to last year punts were taken on Daniel Flynn, Kruger van Wyk, Rob Nicol and Tarun Nethula and those selections proved astray. So, 20 names will be read out Monday, from McCullum down they will be on a sliding scale of $6000 increments.

Numbers 18-20 all get $73,000. On top of that are match fees, $7508 per test, $3250 for each ODI and $2120 per T20 appearance.

Vettori was not asked to stand aside, he did so. He's given sterling service but has had a good run in terms of earning while he is injured and there is no guarantee he will return after Achilles surgery.

Ryder's manager Aaron Klee reported positively on his charge but said they never asked to be considered.

Asked if they had their fingers crossed for a retainer, Klee said ''no, not at all''.

''We never looked at that, we'll just concentrate on getting a domestic contract.''

Complains the contracts mean Wellington gets screwed.

Advocates for a system where Wellington would be screwed anyway.

But it screws with everyone else, was his point really. Auckland wouldn't get to freeload their Munro runs and only lose him for a bit of NZ shorter forms.

Interested in how Otago are going to cover Rutherford's elevation in the next couple of weeks. English import perhaps.

Millmow's mail was bang on tbf, so Bartin's No. 20 you'd think. 'Latham, Anderson, Munro, Elliott, Bartin' was the order he chose.

It is the work of coach Mike Hesson and this year, like every other, there are contentious calls. As captain, Brendon McCullum is top dog on $181,425 and Bruce Martin is understood to have nabbed No 20, worth $73,000.

Yeah, that's probably accurate. From Dougeh down, it's a bit difficult to pick as they're all fringe players who could drop out of the reckoning at very short notice.

Really goes to show that there's big opportunities for vary rapid advancement in earning potential if you hit form at the right time. Six months ago, Mitch McC would've been earning barely enough from the NZC to live in a student scuzz-pit. Now he's likely to be cracking 150k+ if he can stay fit and keep taking wickets.

Given Vettori's continual absence and the lack of any other better alternatives, I think Brucey deserves to be in the 20. Munro and Elliott I'm less convinced about. Latham and Anderson are in there based on potential as much as anything, I guess.

When you have 20 contracts you're always going to have 5 or so guys who get in by the skin of their teeth.

I'm torn as to whether the 20 contract system is good because it allows NZ to contract as many players as possible through both the national and provincial teams, or whether we should trim them down so the best players get paid a good living.

I guess how the relationship between NZC and the IPL pans out could answer it. If there is continual scheduling conflict NZC might need to up their pay so players don't get tempted, but if we keep a window open we can freeride a bit of income for some of our players and pay the rest a bit more, especially the test specialists.

Well it's not exactly like the top players are struggling to make a living. The likes of McCullum and Taylor would be making well above $250,000. Supplement that with an extra couple hundred k from the portion of the ipl that they can attend, and they're doing pretty well. Think it's better to offer broader remuneration rather than just rewarding a few superstars, otherwise a lot of fc players will quickly lose interest and drop out of the game even younger than they currently do.
