Unlucky Australia Cricketers during the golden era under Taylor/Waugh

The slip fielding thread got me thinking of Australia cricketers who missed out on having a long test career because of the dominance of Australia at that time.

Conversation at the time was often "Our A team would beat............"

Who do you think were the unlucky cricketers of that era? The ones who didn't play enough (or any tests) for the ability they had? I think the following players would all walk straight in to the current test team if they were in their prime...

- Matthew Elliott
- Jimmy Maher
- Martin Love
- Jamie Siddons
- Stuart Law
- Darren Lehmann (played a few tests, but should have played closer to 100)
- Darren Berry
- Andy Bichel (same as Lehmann)
- Michael Kasprowicz (same as Lehmann)
- Stuart Clark (played a few, but kept out by McGrath, Gillespie and Lee for ages)
- Stuart MacGill (played 44 tests, but if it weren't for Warne he'd have played 100)

Bevan, though he was of course a staple in the ODI team, would have got more of a run in Tests. Adam Dale's another - outrageously good FC stats.

Clark really just wasn't that good until around the time he got picked. He was obsessed with the idea of being a tearaway when he was younger and he was very inconsistent as a result.

nathan bracken probably should have got more chances to prove he wasn't up to it

Michael Di Venuto, David Hussey, Brad Haddin, Andrew Symonds, Nathan Bracken, Simon Katich are a few that come to mind.

At my CC we have 2 sets of 5 brothers and 1 set of 3 brothers.

There is a trophy each season for the most underachieving brother of those 13 guys. "The Dean Waugh Award". It's pretty prestigious.

Always came across as both a bit of a div and massively up himself in interviews.

Didn't Katich score something like 4000 test runs? Pretty decent career, IMHO.

If one includes him there's also a case for Hussey sr. Has had a good run at tests now, but was 31 (IIRC) before he debuted.

Yeah and Hussey wasn't unlucky not to play Tests in that era, was just not good enough. Averaging mid-30's for your state as Hussey did - in any era - shouldn't see you play Test cricket.

Definitely wouldn't put Kat in the unlucky group.

EDIT: inb4 anyone mentions his CC record. Don't bother.
