The other changes to the Aces squad for the game in Wellington are the return of Blackcap Kyle Mills from international duty and batsman Anaru Kitchen from injury. Tim McIntosh and Reece Young are the players to miss out on selection from last week’s game against the Stags.

Barry has earnt his spot in the Aces line-up after putting together solid performances at the Provincial A tournament in Lincoln and has already posted over 500 runs in club cricket this season.

The Aces face a team that lies one place below them in sixth and need to get maximum points from the game to keep alive their slim hopes of a Plunket Shield crown. The game also marks the start of almost a full month’s worth of games on the road for the Aces.

Coach Paul Strang is hoping that the Aces can make this game the start of a journey up the points table as well.

What about an out of there suggestion for the black caps. Select players solely for a maximum of 2 forms of cricket, that way you dont get 20/20 skills interferring with tests (still allow players focussing on tests/1 dayers to play domestic 20/20 and IPL for financial reasons).

So a test team of something like

Guptill
Rutherford/Flynn
Williamson
Taylor
McCullum
Brownlie
Watling
Vettori/Martin
Bracewell
Southee
Boult

A one day team of

Guptill
Ryder/Watling
Williamson
Taylor
McCullum
Franklin
Neesham/Anderson
McCullum
Mills
Southee
McClenaghan

A 20/20 team of

Ryder/Devcich
Ronchi
Franklin
de Grandhomme
Munro
Anderson
Noema-Barnett/Devcich
Neesham
McCullum
Kuggeleign
McClenaghan

the 20/20 side would focus around big hitters with high strike rates, kuggs would be my 2nd strike bowler due to his ability to bowl slower balls

Because 3 seamers + Vettori works so well?

Well, with Williamson, Taylor, McCullum, and Brownlie your middle order, it limites you to 4 bowlers....with Williamson the part timer, so there isnt really room to bring in another bowling option....unless you play someone like Wheeler or Henry instead of Vettori/Martin and give Williamson the spin bowling role

You'd be mad to drop Guptill from 2020. He's actually sort of good at it.

Agree we do have to be mindful of how T20/ODIs affect our test players - especially the fast bowlers and a few batsmen like Williamson imo.

But my gosh that is a horrible T20 team!

It is for a first class team, but for a 20/20 team its a solid team

Ryder 145
Ronchi 138
Franklin 123
de Grandhomme 164
Munro 128
Anderson 126
Noema-Barnett 138
Neesham 156
McCullum 131
Kuggs 126
McClenaghan 80
Devcich 126

The only reason I would drop Guptill (and McCullum, Taylor) from the T20s is because I want them to improve on their test play

I don't think it would make any difference. Taylor isn't very good at them anyway so I'd leave him out.

You lost me at Devcich. Even his most ardent fan who recently posted here said he was a work in progress.

to be fair on Devcich, he is the only guy with decent power and can bowl offspin (who isnt named Nicol) that I wouldnt want focusing on tests

If Devcich gets selected in the next 12 months for any form of the game for NZ I will make a placard, and hire a loud speaker and make a spectacle of myself outside of parliament asking for the government to intervene.

Unlike England, South Africa or other top nations we simply do not have the talent pool to specialize everyone.
Like it or not T20 is here to stay, brings in the most revenue and gathers the most interest. For the long term stability of the game in this country, more people need to become interested in the sport, and the best way to do that is to win, especially in the T20 format.
If we allow most of our best talent to specialize in Tests, our T20 team will suffer as a result, and interest in the sport will dwindle. Sure our Test team might win a few games, but not enough to offset the fanbase lost by the detriment of our T20 side.

I'd rather just play Nathan McCullum.

Good on Michael Barry for his call up to the Aces side. I used play 1st XI cricket with him at school. Good player and a good guy too.
