Ronchi out with a hammy injury, 4-6 weeks. Big shame, would have had him batting 7 for the tests.

Marto has broken down as well. Gillespie 11 wickets.. I'd give him 1 more game to prove himself and fitness, and if he looks the goods get him in the squad.
Shame for him, but with McCullum moving to number 5 he was never that likely to get a callup to the test side.

You're probably right, I reckon the batting line up should be something like this;

BMac
Guptill
Williamson
Taylor
Brownlie
Watling
Ronchi

Me too, but Bahnz is probably right that he wouldn't have made the side with McCullum shifting to no5. I guess Blundell will be the back up keeper?

Why would Mac moving to 5 effect Ronchi's potential selection?

Anyway, a shame. He must have been putting a lot of pressure on the selectors. 4 tons this season? Very impressive.

Erm, because it leaves one less middle order slot to fill...
But he's a 7.
And it opens up an opener's slot, and Ronchi's direct competition for number 7 is an ex-opener ...

The thing that made Ronchi's selection unlikely was Watling's good form, and Hesson painting himself into a corner by saying Watling's won't be moved. And since then, Ronchi's has continued to apply huge pressure in the selectors. Mac at 5, or Ryder at 5 in a magical parellel universe, has not much to do with it

What you're saying is correct, Watling would need to open. You can't drop Brownlie, who was our number 5.

I hate the way selectors make these mistakes time and time again.. "He's doing well down at 6/7/8, lets put them into a spot where we are struggling and see how they go". If they are performing in thier position, don't move them. They are doing their job and doing it well. Others need to sort out their ****.

It's almost like BMac is looking at Watling and sayin give me some of those runs. Total bull****.

Yeah, and he could have batted number 7 and Watling remained at number 6. With McCullum moving to no5 it means Brownlie will move to no6 and Watling to no7. No room for Ronchi.

I agree with this, but the selectors have already said that Watling will not open, and will continue to be the keeper/batsman.

Makes no sense whatsoever since Ronchi is actually a better keeper, from what I've seen. Would be so silly to see Ronchi play as a specialist batsman.

Ok. Retaining Watling's at 6 makes as much sense as anyone else pretty much. If it came to Ronchi's being picked.

Strange that would result in 3 keepers in the team. Part time bowlers would be handy.

Has anyone noticed that our likely starting 11 are all RH batsmen? Not that it should matter if they are each the best in their position

I watched Craig Cachopa's entire second innings v Wellington to see what prompted the round the wicket line from Gillespie. Answer nothing. But as soon as he did he had him in trouble every ball, took about 4 or 5 to dismiss him.

Stored away since Gillespie vs. Cachopa at Eden Park possibly. Lots of really crude attempts to pull (and follow short ball king Munro's lead) that day.

Howsie

Yeah, rare for me to show a genuine interest, but what would an OD XI probably look like now Howsie? So many guys looking to usher in this changing of the guard, Carter, Popli, Vodnala, Desai, Henry Cooper, Hampton, Tamati Clarke. Seems that Seifert is on the outer for now.
Hard to say really, Joe Carter, Brett Hampton, and Jono Hickey would all be very close, infact I'd be shocked if they didn't see any action during the comp. Clarke has fallen away a little bit, he's had a rough summer. While Vodnala, Desai and Cooper are probably a good two years away from being at that level. Seifert is playing for the "A" team during the week, just as a batsmen though. Racked up another 50 over double ton for his school last week, kid is a freak of a batsmen. Honestly wouldn't be shocked if he got a List A game this summer.

Good news for Wellington, in that Ryder and Ronchi are likely to be back for the final round of Plunket Shield next week.

When do we name our squad for the test series? It's obviously unlikely, but if Ronchi scores a century or something, you never know.

The Queenstown warm-up match XII for Feb 27 will be named in the next few days. I know Jeets was looking at that match, he and his brother have had to manage his Dad's Lotto shop in Wgtn.

"Probable" Kippinfo XII

Fulton
Flynn
Rutherford/Carl Chops
Latham
Brownlie
Munro
Ronchi
NcCullum (argh, Jeeeeeeeets)
B Martin
Gillespie
Mitch/Wagner

Throw Taylor in there instead of Latham. He's no chance of playing, and Taylor needs to play as much cricket as possible before the test series.
