State Championship: Round One

Well not surprisingly it was the Academy players who shone on Day One:

Canterbury v Otago:

Peter Fulton 114, Neil Broom 53 & Jeff Wilson took 3/60 for Otago.

Auckland v Northern:

Nick Horsley 42, Grant Robinson 40, Andre Adams 5-40, Kyle Mills 3-33

Wellington v Central:

No batting highlights at all...Richard Sherlock took 3/11 off 5 overs..so a dream start for him.

Up until today, there had been a large amount of rain over Hamilton & Auckland through the last week so I presume the pitch at Hamilton would have been fairly juicy.

Not sure about the Basin..it looked like an scorcher down there thanks to the coverage of the premiere of the LOTR's..but I think there had been rain there also over the last week.

Apparently Timaru was up in the mid 20's so it's no surprise the pitch was better for batting on down there.

If NZ are so concerned about the wickets in Hamilton & Wellington, then perhaps they need to change venues to grounds where the toss won't be such a problem.

Also pitches at this time of the year do assist the seamers in NZ.

The thing is with Hamilton and Wellington is that they are the two geniune cricket venues in NZ and with the successful Boxing Day Test.
