What's the logic behind 3. Kallis 4. Border? Surely you push them both down one?

I agree.........

KALLIS

78 innings at No.3. Average = 39.71
152 innings at No.4 Average = 49.35

That is a significant drop in average. Clearly Kallis is more comfortable against an older ball. Also, he will be bowling more than usual because he is your first change seam bowler. Batting lower down the order gives him more of a rest.

BORDER

36 innings at No.3. Average = 47.09
61 innings at No.4. Average = 50.44
56 innings at No.5. Average = 52.05
45 innings at No.6. Average = 52.16

It appears Border can bat anywhere. Although from memory he had a torrid time against the West Indian quicks at first drop. Because he is a defensive batsman he would be more useful propping up the batting order at 5 or 6, not counter attacking at No.3 - in my opinion.

Excellent points all.

Sorry my mistake! I was looking at the Strike Rate column. Derr.

No.3 = 49.77
No.4 = 64.26
No.5 = 42.71

Fortunately for me the point still stands. Kallis enjoys the older ball better at No.4. Although 49.77 is still a superb average at No.3

Incidently, Border's figures are correct. There is no adjacent Strike Rate column in his stats to confuse my brain.

Watson, wag. I took the sane approach and it ended up in a "when one door closes another opens" situation where both doors lead to the same problem. Lose/lose springs to mind. Will pick in the next. E30, less than a mile from home.
